During the slave trade American laws did not recognize slave marriages or family relations. Also children were sent to live in separate cabinets from their parents and about 10% to 20% of husbands and wives were separated in the auction. To conserve their family ancestry, slaves passed on names from their descendants to their children or even names of their descendants' owners. Most evidences show that over a third of fugitive slaves ran away to meet their relatives. Due to the countless separations between family members most of the time strangers took on the role of parents to children who had been separated from their relatives. The experiences slaves suffered through together made their bonds stronger and allowed them to survive the hardships of their lives.

Slaves were punished by whipping, shackling, hanging, beating, burning, mutilation, branding, rape, and imprisonment.

Slaveholders used both psychological coercion and physical violence to prevent slaves from disobeying their wishes.

The most efficient way to discipline slaves was to threaten to sell them.

Slave masters also used punishment gear like neck braces, balls and chains, leg irons, and paddles with holes to produce blood blisters.

The lash was the most common form of punishment but I wasn't effective because it often left slaves incapacitated or even dead.
