1) One type of collaborative learning experience that I have utilized in my classroom community in the past and will continue to implement in the future is the use of the Jig-Saw activity. From my personal experiences with using the Jigsaw activity, all students do have to be engaged in the task at hand in order for the group to accomplish their mission. One road block with jigsaws is ensuring that the articles that the students are reading are developmentally appropriate for 8th graders. If the content is too complex or abstract, then your students will not walk away with the information that you had initially intended for them to walk away with.

2) I think a pro of collaborative learning is that students have the opportunity to learn to work as a team, and refine their interpersonal relationship skills with others. Listening, respecting and appreciating differences, and treating others with dignity are important life skills that students will need to take with them no matter where life takes them.

1. I have used collaborative learning in many ways in my classroom. I primary use it for Social Studies and Science. I feel with my grade level, these are the subjects that it works best for my students. It allows time for discovery in small groups and for students to work together on solutions.
An area that seems to be a struggle at times is grouping students based on different needs of my room.
