The PYP Planner by Kelsey

Read through the PYP planner. For those new to it, identify how you think it reflects IB commitments and beliefs about learning and teaching? For those who are already using it, how have you found it supports agency and inquiry in your context? What challenges does it offer? Please also consider the following:

What are 3–5 key words that guide the collaborative planning process?
How do we develop the planner bearing the student agency in mind?
Does collaboration with grade level colleagues mean that all the learning must be the same?
How does assessment feature in planning?

Post a summary of your thoughts on the Padlet.

Read through the challenges that other participants have identified and respond to the challenges of two of them.

1. Key Words in Collaborative Planning:
Some guiding keywords for collaborative planning in the PYP context are agency, inquiry, collaboration, transdisciplinary, and reflection. These words emphasize student-centered planning and a holistic approach that integrates various disciplines to make learning more meaningful and relevant to students.

2. Developing the Planner with Student Agency in Mind:
The PYP planner is developed with student agency at its core by allowing teachers to focus on student choice, voice, and ownership. Through intentional questions and adaptable frameworks, the planner encourages teachers to create learning experiences that give students space to explore, question, and contribute to their learning journey.

3. Collaboration Among Colleagues – Uniformity vs. Flexibility:
Collaboration doesn’t imply identical learning experiences across classrooms. Instead, it aims for coherence while allowing flexibility. Teachers work together to establish the unit’s broad goals and objectives, but they adapt activities to the needs and interests of their students. This allows for personalized learning while maintaining shared learning outcomes.

4. Assessment in the Planning Process:
Assessment is embedded throughout the planning process, not just as an endpoint. The planner encourages formative assessments to be used for ongoing feedback, guiding adjustments to support learning goals. Summative assessments are carefully planned to align with the unit's purpose and allow students to demonstrate understanding in a meaningful way.

Strengths of the PYP Planner in Supporting Agency and Inquiry:
I’ve found the PYP planner particularly effective in my context for fostering agency, as it encourages students to take ownership of their learning. The inquiry-based approach also enables students to dive deeper into topics that resonate with them, promoting curiosity and critical thinking.

Challenges of the PYP Planner:
One challenge is balancing the need for student agency with curriculum requirements. Teachers sometimes struggle to give students adequate freedom while ensuring all learning objectives are met. Another challenge is the time required for effective collaboration, as it can be difficult to align schedules and resources among team members.

Responding to Peers’ Challenges:
After reading my colleagues’ reflections, I noticed that several have identified similar challenges around balancing agency with curriculum goals and managing time effectively for collaboration. I’d suggest that integrating smaller collaborative tasks into existing team meetings might streamline this process. Additionally, using digital tools for collaboration can sometimes ease time constraints by allowing asynchronous contributions to the planning process.
