         <description><![CDATA[<p>After Washington left office, the Vice President John Adams took his place as President. </p><p><br/></p><p><strong>The XYZ Affair:</strong></p><p>At the start of his term, France and Britain were still at war. Jay's Treaty of 1794 led to better relations with Britain, but it didn't resolve all issues with France. They thought of this as America trying to help the British. In return, they seized American ships and cargo. Adams sent out a team to try to resolve the problem in 1797. The French sent out three agents who demanded a bribe and a loan for France , but the Americans refused. When Adams learned, he was furious. He prepared for war. In the report, X, Y, and Z were used in place of the agent's names. As a result, it was called the XYZ affair. PG. 238-239</p>]]></description>
