Polk was one of America's leaders at the time and he wanted to expand west. He referred to moving west as America's "Manifest Destiny". During this time period the west was Mexico's territory. Mexico was still mad at the United States after the U.S won texas away from Mexico. So, James K. Polk offered Mexico 30 million dollars for modern day New Mexico and California. Mexico refused to sell. But James K. Polk refused to take no as an answer. Polk sent the U.S troops to a disputed area near the Mexican-American border. Polk then took this opportunity to declare war against Mexico. During this period of time, Mexico's government was very screwed up and their troops were no match for the American army. So after 2 years of battle, Mexico agreed to sign the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.
