I don't have a favorite singer or novel, my favorite comic is the Batman series. I love DC comic overall but in the recent decade their overall plot of comics, games, novels and movies are in low quality compare to the earlier ones. Flameo, everyone! I'm Isabel (she/her). I'm a 3rd Year BIOL major with a CRWR minor born and raised in Vancouver. I really love reading, writing, memes (became a meme legend in BIOL 230), genetics, dogs (eg: samoyeds), Nickelodeon's Avatar: the Last Airbender, Mario Kart, card games, and overall good vibes. :D

Fiction is amongst 1 of the genres I really like to read and write (part of why I'm taking this course hehe). I wheeze at how long my TBR (i.e. to be read list aka a to-do list for reading books) is; I made the executive choice to order the books on MyKindle since it saves paper, is more cost-friendly, and my annotations can be pristine. I give props to Ana Huang's Twisted series for getting me back into the book community. After taking CRWR 200 in MaJune 2021 and loving the fiction unit, I knew I had to take CRWR 209 down the road. I'm very very excited for this course. I tend to use Avatar as a writing standard; I made a lot of friends who are fellow fans, and I fangirl over the writing behind Avatar hehe.

I also like science, and literally I enjoy incorporating some science into my creative writing adventures (eg: I made a genetics system for this 1 piece because it was a way for me to review my science material while also facilitating some world building). I run a meme account on Instagram @scientificmemes02 and post original content on Fridays; it's a great way to embrace my inner creativity to communicate some fun science facts (eg: why black labs are the most common lab).

What I like about my degree is that I can get the best of both worlds (reference intended).

Howdy guys! My name is Wes and I’m a second year Arts student wanting to major in English Literature and Film Studies.

Creative writing and storytelling have been a massive part of my life ever since grade nine when I took my first electives in creative writing and drama. Since then, I have been enthralled by the power of a good tale. Any piece of media whether it be film, books, comics, video games, tv shows, theatre, videos, or music that involves a strong story I HAVE to get my hands on…or at least that’s my goal as I usually fall behind with everything I set out to watch/read

If it involves a story in anyway, even just sitting around a campfire, I am there for it 100% of the time.

My favourite genre to write in is either medieval fantasy (as I am obsessed with worldbuilding) or historical fiction (as I am obsessed with history). My goal with this course is to expand my horizons as pertaining to genre, and getting over that mind-numbing writers block that keeps the best of us bogged down.

I get stumped a lot of the time, so I love to workshop and brainstorm ideas with other people as much as possible. That, but I’m also just a fan of nerding out to anything related to books or movies so if you ever wanna chat or hit a little writing session, DM me @ wesminaker on Instagram :)

I’m Angelo, a 4th year student and I’ve been living in the Lower Mainland for my entire life. I’ve bounced between many different majors but ultimately I chose Psychology.
My specific areas of interest in fiction are sci-fi and fantasy, but as a writer I’m particularly attached to writing within modern settings.
I don’t actually read very much so it’s hilarious that I even like writing. Most of the media I consume is either TV shows, movies, or video games. But as a visual person, I think I aim to represent in writing what I can visualize/describe in my head.

Some things that I hope that I can learn and achieve in this class is to be able to write stories that people care about and relate to. Another thing I hope to be able to do is become better at using language to create better and meaningful imagery. I also hope to be able to write more effortful dialogue. But one step at a time!

Greetings! My name is Ella and this is my second year at UBC. My major is currently undecided but I'm thinking about a major in Creative Writing or English. I've been living in Vancouver for almost my whole life.
Ever since I was little, I've enjoyed daydreaming and writing stories. My favourite genres include Fantasy and Sci-Fi. I also enjoy my fair share of creepy short stories, but don't think I plan on reading a full horror novel in the near future. My bookshelves at home are completely full of books. I absolutely love indulging in fiction through all kinds of media, but my absolute favourites have to be Avatar: The Last Airbender (hehe now I feel like rewatching it again), The Owl House, Genshin Impact, and the HP series. I also enjoy dabbling in fandoms from time to time, just to see the creative works of each one because WOW, there are some seriously talented people out there.

Other than that, I really really need to work on actually reading again (I say, as a prospective ENGL major), as well as writing my daydreams into reality, so I’m hoping this class will help out with that! Hey folks! I’m Emma (they/them) and I’m entering my 4th year as a GRSJ major and English Lit minor. I currently live on campus and my family is in Langley. I’ve loved reading since I was a kid and it’s a hobby I spend as much of my time doing as I possibly can. I read lots of sci-fi and fantasy but lately, I’ve been dabbling in more contemporary works, and I’m beginning to shift my focus to speculative fiction by QTBIPOC authors. I took CRWR 200 in my first year and I really enjoyed it, so I’m back for more before I graduate! In this course, I’m hoping to explore my own voice and what I might have to say; I’m often hesitant to write because I feel that I don’t have anything worthwhile to say, and I wanna squash that. I want to embrace creativity and joy, play with ideas, and get a feel for what writing means to and looks like for me.

Hey everybody, My name is Aafreen I am in my second-year psychology major at UBC. I live on campus but am originally from Mumbai, India. When I was a lot younger I detested reading, which is quite odd for someone taking a writing class. It was around the time I turned 12 years old that my aunt gifted me a book called Matilda by Roald Dahl, which absolutely changed my life, turning me into a complete bookworm.
This is going to be the first writing class I take at university and I am so excited about it. I love writing and reading fiction.

Howdy Y'all!

My name is Francesca and I am a second year student studying to major in Biology and minor in creative writing. The final goal is to become a Vet and help all animals. Currently while I am studying at UBC, I am also doing an online Vet Tech Diploma to help further my studies in my Veterinarian career. I hope to become a small animal Veterinarian in the end! In the above photo is my best friend (the fluffy black doggo!) in the entire world, he is the reason I am so inspired to study so hard and allow my creative juices to flow. When he was a puppy and I was six years old, he got injured and little six year old me figured out what was wrong. From that moment on I knew I wanted to help animals. Sadly, Titan (black fluffy doggo!) passed away in April due to a respiratory disease alongside laryngeal paralysis. All that is to say (as you can tell I am a story teller), he has encouraged me to become a better writer and be confident in what I truly believe in!

I love reading and writing Mystery novels. Although, I do like writing a good sob story. I wrote a short story on high school that got published and made almost everyone who read it, cry. So, if I am not scaring the pants off of you with a good murder, you can bet I will make you cry!

My name is Felix and this is a picture of my dog. Her name is Maple, yes like the syrup. Quite the fitting name too since she moves slow like the syrup moves from the bottle to your waffles. She's an oldy now who waddles about around the backyard and she's quite the hefty beast which makes it look like she's in a permanent lat spread. But we love her unconditionally and try to give her the best life possible.

I'm a 2nd year Kinesiology major currently living in Burnaby (yes, the commute to school is brutal). This is the second writing class I've taken so far in my university career. To be quite honest, I don't write all that much and I don't read regularly or as a hobby either. But I understand that it can be very beneficial to be good at writing and analyzing books and stories, hence why I have taken this course. I hope to get better at interpreting and analyzing stories and books and improve my writing skills.

Here's a quick list of what I like to do: play volleyball, go to the gym, listen to music (current favourite artist: Khalid), play the piano, hang out with friends, and watch movies and TV shows (currently watching "You" on Netflix).

I've left a more detailed intro in Canvas, but on this Padlet, I wanted to share something with you.

This is a photo of Rudy and I on his 7^th birthday, just before the pandemic hit. It’s hard to tell from Rudy’s expression (did you know that Cardigan Welsh corgis are known as the sad clowns of the corgi world?), but he loves his birthday because we invite friends and family over, BBQ hot dogs (get it?!) and he opens an obscene amount of presents (toys, treats), and then eats a doggie cake baked in the shape of a bone. And he gets to wear a brand-new bowtie that we buy for him for every special event, like his birthday!

Perhaps this is a great metaphor for writing and life? – celebrate the moments that are meaningful with cake and friends/family because you never know what’s around the corner (like a pandemic!).

Some fun facts about me are that I listen to almost any type of modern music except for country music and in many different languages too. Hi everyone! My name is Dua (she/her). I’m a 4th year student who is majoring in Chemical Engineering and minoring in Creative Writing. I’ll be attending class from either Surrey or Vancouver as I am constantly commuting between the two cities. That is a photo of Magpie - the cat my brother and I have been fostering for 2 months. I still don’t know if I’m going to keep her or let her find her forever home with another dedicated cat lover once she is approved for adoption.

I am a complete “lab rat” - I love anything and everything to do with engineering research and experimentation. My main interests within chemical engineering are sustainable energy, alternative fuels, and waste/pollution reduction methods. My past experiences have included working with hydrogen fuel cells, textile recycling, biodegradable pulp products, and I have even dabbled in lab management.

Despite my technical background, I am an avid fiction reader, and a bit of cinemaphile. I think that’s where my love of writing began before I realized how much I can express myself and my creativity through writing. I don’t know if I’ll ever be a professional writer, but I have absolutely loved my CRWR minor until now (I have taken 3 CRWR classes so far), and I hope to further learn the craft of storytelling in this class.

My name is Sarah (she/her) and I'm in Vancouver while I take this course. I've never been much of a writer on my free time, but I did enjoy writing what I *had to* write for school in the past. As for reading, I LOVE(d) to read. I don't read anymore, ever.. I probably haven't read an actual book since ninth grade, I just never find the time to anymore. But I know that if I were to pick up a book now I'd still like reading. On that note, ONLY fiction books.

Because of that, I am so especially excited to take this class because not only have I quite enjoyed reading fiction books, the most writing I've ever done has been fiction as well. However, what I really hope to take away from this course is creating a stronger skill set in my writing skills as I feel most of what I've written in the past has been quite cliche or piggybacked off of previous books I've read.

Unlike my interest in book genres, my music taste has a pretty wide range. I love "emo" music (think MCR, PTV, etc.), country ("real" and "fake"), indie, folk, (some) pop and a lot of random songs I wouldn't know how to label :'D

Hi everyone!
My name is Angela Li (she/her) and I'm in my fourth year of biology after finishing co-op this past year. I'll be attending from Burnaby this term and I am not very looking forward to the hour long bus commutes hahah. I really love writing, and English has always been my favourite subject growing up. When I was younger, I used to keep a journal and write in it everyday. Sometimes when I'm bored, I'll pick up one of my journals and read some of the things I've written for a good laugh or to be reminded of my happy childhood. Since this is my final year at UBC, I wanted to take some fun courses that interest me, and I am really looking forward to learning more about fictional writing. I also am very excited to meet everyone, although virtually, and I hope to make friends with others who are equally passionate about writing as I am!

Although these sentences are sounding cranky, I promise I am very pleasant and not a complete 🤬. I live in Coquitlam, which other than nothing to do here, you have nothing to do here. My name is Mila (she/her) and I’m a 4th year Bachelor of Media Studies student currently situated in South Surrey. I have taken a number of CRWR courses at UBC mostly to learn about the different genres and styles of writing, but also to test the waters and figure out what I like best. My favourite so far was probably CRWR 208 with Taylor Brown-Evans, as I have always been really into comics, but I wouldn't have started making them if I hadn’t taken that course. I occasionally write some poetry and lyrics! I’m excited to learn more about the conventions of fiction, as I would like to apply it to my personal projects. Also, I’m an animal lover, and I’m so grateful that my backyard is near a forest. I always have little critters stopping by — I've added a picture of a racoon that my family has endearingly started to call the family “dog.”

Hey everyone, my name is Rhea (she/her) and I'm in my third year, majoring in Sociology. I live in Coquitlam, and have lived there my whole life! I am taking this course because I have always loved creative writing. In fact in high school, I took two regular creative writing classes, then in my senior year, I did my own creative writing independent study, where I wrote a chap book. One of my poems even got published! And this is the third creative writing course I'm taking at UBC. Hi everyone, my name is Tammie (she/her) and I am a 2nd year science student majoring in Computer Science! I love fictional works such as comics, movies, animes, and novels, and I love to draw in my freetime.
