Name 2 ways that complaining about your job as a teacher is analogous to the Eagles' song "Hotel California" ?

Complaining may feel good at the time, but makes things harder in the long run. Once you join the Complainer's club, it's hard to leave. In the song "Hotel California" it says in the last line "you can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave"!

As the song, "Hotel California" implies, any time of year/you can find it here, you can find complaining anywhere, everyday. The effective teacher takes the negativity and turns it into something positive. Staying focused on students is what makes the difference.

Just like the song says, "You can check in any time you want, but you can never leave", it's easy to complain. You can always find someone who is more than ready to complain with you. But, when you try to stop complaining, those same folks work overtime to drag you back in. There is LOTS of things to complain about in our profession and looking for the good in things takes a ton of effort. If we remember why we chose this profession in the first place and focus on our students and not the "crappy" part of our jobs, we can find more things to be positive about.

There's plenty of room at the Hotel California... There are always complainers but there should be more encouragers. Attitudes are contagious and good ones should be spread. Complaining does no good. Making the most of everyday and turning the negative into the positive helps you, your students, and your peers.

We can make this a good place to be or one that is not good. Our attitudes have a lot to do with the environment we create around us. Sometimes it's hard to stay positive when we narrow our vision to the just our classroom or the just this school. We need to broaden our out-look and see the big picture. We are naturally social and want to express our feelings, but that's not always the appropriate thing to do. If we want to make a difference, we have to be professional and do what's best for the kids.
Templeton

I agree with Templeton's remark about the other lyrics in the song that state "this can be heaven or this can be hell". Your environment is what you make it. Complaining may let off some steam but to improve your situation takes action, being positive and having a good attitude. We are here to do our job.
Hotel California is a place where a little taste becomes an addiction. Complaining may allow a little steam letting but becomes a bad attitude that is contagious and becomes epidemic. Making the effort to bring positivity to daily struggles and frustrations can become a daily blessing to yourself and those you share this space with.

Keep your eyes on the students as a first priority. Teachers try to keep it student focused and hitting this target can be hard. The great educators take into consideration the larger vision and see the effects of each decision made. They also, question and ask, "is this the best thing for my students?" This focus can help shift the thinking from negative to what is best for students.

C. Byrd

Complaining about your job can be compared to the Eagles' song "Hotel California" in many ways. The song states, "Any time of the year, you can find it hear." This is much like the negativity and complaining that floats around a school building. There is always someone willing to listen and contribute. Once you've begun to contribute to the negativity, it's difficult to leave it behind. Just like the song says, "You can check out at any time you like, but you can never leave."

IN Chapter 8, he uses the analogy that like in the song lyric, he refers to complaining , Anytime or year /you can find it here, another he quoted was You can check out anytime you like but you can never leave, which I think refers to detacting yourself from your class and responsibility.

Don't remember lyrics very well, but complaining is like an infectious disease... spreads very easily and quickly. Also like a bad habit...easy to start and hard to stop. I think the key is to stay focused on what you can change...not what you cannot. That in itself helps to curb the appetite for complaining. It's all about what's best for the kids anyway.

The song states that "you can check out any time you like, but you can never leave". This is true of leaving negativity. It also says "any time of year, you can find it here". This is often true of complaining in the workplace.
Focusing on the students can help you maintain a positive attitude because it will remind you of what truly matters. We can't control what these students come from or go home to, but we can make their school days positive, uplifting, and exciting.
Morgan
