One of the main things I have taken so far is how cross curricular you can make computing - how you can add elements into other lessons to further them. For example, I’m really keen to use the iPads more within lessons to enhance childrens learning. I taught a lesson regarding researching habitats and would have loved the children to research independently on the internet but was nervous about their usage - now we’ve learnt about QR codes, i’ll be able to direct them to specific web addresses, ensuring they’re safe and accessing relevant information.
It was interesting to see how apprehensive some teachers are about teaching or using technology, therefore it’s important to me that I embrace it and encourage it within my teaching to ensure that children have wide and varied opportunities.
I think I’ve become more open to technology, although I was quite open minded anyway, however I think the more I learn about what is available and how easy it is to use, the more my confidence is growing and the more I want to try things out in the classroom myself.

I have really enjoyed the computing module and feel like I have learnt so many practical skills which I can transfer easily to my own lessons. This module has shown me how using computing cross curricularly can be an exciting and useful tool at any age and I now feel confident to use it and to deliver my own computing session. Completing the PET task in computing demonstrated to me how much young children love using technology and how much they can learn from it. Issues on SE1 were that the school wasn’t very supportive of the use of technology in EYFS because they didn’t think that the children could do it. I hope to challenge this belief in my next placement and when I have my own class.

Computing has made me realise that as a teacher you are not just restricted to using computers and word/ presentation software- this was my assumption, as this is my only memory of primary and secondary ICT.
I use technology such as iPad's for personal use all of the time, so the fact I can adapt these into my lessons with children is exciting! I feel that the use of interactive whiteboards, bee-bots, iPad's and green-screens ignite children's interests in technology as on placement I saw children show great interest in this, it was different to the ICT suite. What I like most about computing is how it promotes problem solving, with many cross curricular links. Initially I thought computing would be difficult and hard to apply in my teaching, as many teachers in my previous placements have felt that way. However, I am now not cautious to use technology regularly to enhance my lessons for the children. Overall, I have really enjoyed this module. Thank you.

I have really enjoyed this module. I feel as though I have furthered my understanding into how technology can be taught and used in the classroom. I did not realise how early on you can teach aspects of computer science. During SE1, I was able to teach nursery children algorithms, something that I had not thought of incorporating into the nursery environment. The children loved being robots and directing their beebots by pressing the buttons and exploring the ICT. When I got the children up to explain to them that we are going to be robots and follow instructions, the children got very excited; this was a lovely experience. After I had introduced the children to the beebots the CT started repeating the lesson to the children and extending it as the children engaged so well with the session.
I am really looking forward to seeing how I can improve my own practice through the use of technology with ideas shown in the seminars. I have learnt a lot that I am able to take forward with me.

I have found the computing module very beneficial. The module has made me realise that there is a lot more to computing than just learning how to use a computer. Before starting this module, I thought computer science was a complex thing which I would never get to grips with, this module has taught me that this is not the case, computer science is actually a easy to understand aspect of teaching. The module has also gave me ideas for things I can do with my class using computers/tablets.

This module has given me lots of inspiration for my future teaching practice, particularly how computing can be incorporated into lessons across the curriculum. During my SE1 placement I taught a series of lessons using BeeBots. Taught during the school’s road safety week, the children had to program the BeeBots to travel along the street map and arrive at school safely. The children were very engaged with the activity but many were not able to successfully complete the task. Ideally I would like to have followed it up with another programming lesson the following week to build on what they had learnt. During SE2 I am hoping to become more proficient in interactive whiteboard software and use it to enhance my lessons

During the computing lectures, I have learnt how the use of tablets can be effective to share learning, develop higher order thinking and support in enabling assessment for learning. The use of Scratch and Green Screen Technology is useful to deliver in as it is an interactive way of learning.

In SE1 being in an Early Years class, the use of technology was not applied as much so I hope to implement this into my teaching to stretch children’s computing skills in an engaging manner. I did introduce beebots through the use of tablets and the children were eager to learn and this was implemented throughout the lesson. Overall, I have enjoyed the computing module, learnt practical skills from this module and I will be able to transfer these new skills into my teaching.

Thank you, Andrea.
