Self-Assessment is something that I don't think elementary teachers always get right. Successful self-assessment really begins with the mindset the class builds from the start of the year and to what level of ownership the students have on their learning.

With Self-Assessment I have learned that clear expectations are crucial if you want this to be a successful strategy in the classroom. Students do not always want to take this step in their learning so it is great that there are resources such as Google Docs that let the teacher see the results of an exit ticket while also seeing how many students answered the questions and put in the work. This opens up great opportunities to discuss the students' efforts and understandings of what is being taught.

Something new I learned is that Self-Assessment is a cycle that contains a beginning, middle, and end. There first needs to be very clear and explicit expectations given from the teacher. Students then should self-assess. This is where I thought the cycle ends but we need to take it one step further and apply the understanding. There needs to be a conversation about what the students understand and what they need to be retaught.

I use self-assessment in the form of exit tickets frequently when teaching 3rd grade math. I would like to branch out from exit tickets and do some research on other ways to have students self-assess. I would also like to have students practice self-assessing in other subject areas as well as math.

There are many ways to have students self-assess. One way, in particular, is through the use of exit tickets. Self-Assessment is a cycle and there need to be clear expectations, self-assessment, and application of understanding.
