This Los Angeles Times article follows the story of two women who have similar and contrasting involvement in the sex trafficking industry. Sonya Sakyai is from Thailand and traveled to the U.S. initially starting off as a sex worker but eventually worked off her debt as an "indentured prostitute" and became a trafficker herself. Her work involved traveling back and forth to Thailand to recruit other sex workers to bring back to the U.S. She is currently serving her sentence in a California prison.
In Lydia Dineva's case, she was a Bulgarian native searching for work through friends of friends and found herself in Sweden forced to work as a sex worker. She eventually became pregnant but her pimp made it clear that she was not going to leave her position as a sex worker. Both of these women ended up in these positions while searching to improve their economic circumstances.
A main concern for my HCP I'd like to focus on is how to improve the overall quality of these women's lives so they don't have to turn to such alternatives in order to make a decent living.

With the research that I've done for the HCP, many of the scholarly articles have included a variety of possible solutions to remediate the growing number of humans trafficked. Two sources that I used in the HCP, written by Ghosh and Sarasu, include general and detailed solutions that involve improving literacy, creating awareness for this phenomenon, and stronger enforcement of the laws against human trafficking, etc. The overall consensus of most of the papers that I've read are concerned with reforming laws and those solutions aforementioned. The goal of my Advocacy Project is to explore these possible solutions and finding a realistic plan to implement those solutions that have been discussed. The difficulty in this is that the solutions are not in just one area of focus and each involve very different approaches. With the social issue, the goal would be to improve literacy and change the way women and young girls are viewed in India society. The political approach involves reforming many of the laws in place and pushing for authorities to be more strict with enforcement. The economic situation involves improving the standard of living for each individual. Each of these tasks have their setbacks and would require a careful plan that would address the human trafficking problem.

The New York Times piece did a great job with transitioning between ideas and creating a nice flow while addressing the overall purpose of the article. By acknowledging that there is a lack of data and research in regards to nail salon workers and their exposure to hazardous materials, the writer creates a sense of trust with its audience because it shows understanding and research on the topic. Integrating information from many interviews also gives this piece credibility since they're first hand account of working in a salon. The video included in the article creates an urgency because it explains all the harmful chemicals that salon workers are exposed to. Another urgency comes from the image of Dr. Hwu which reveals a face stamped with seriousness. Because he is a doctor who has dealt with patients who work in salons with similar symptoms, it shows the severity of the situation.

Although this paper doesn't give me a very comprehensive plan to reform the policies against trafficking, it does include sources that I will further research.
"The existing policies against trafficking of women and children in India are heavily skewed to the demand dimensions of the problem, with little or no attention given to the supply dimensions of the problem (World Health Organization, UNICEF, & UNAIDS 2006)." This alone tells me that I should do more research on those organizations to gain a better understanding of possible law reformations that would be effective.

This paper discusses the many laws in place in Nepal and India that address trafficking and explains the shortcomings of these laws. It also suggests "establishing a witness and victim protection program to guarantee the security of witnesses, victims, relatives, and human rights defenders. Protection is also required for persons investigating or carrying out advocacy programs regarding human rights abuses." It didn't occur to me that authorities who are meant to enforce these laws may require protection themselves against the trafficking industry, but this is something that I will consider when working on the Advocacy Project.

This document talks about how stricter enforcement of punishment against traffickers has been done before with no effect because the police and male population generally have low regard for women. It makes me think that maybe enforcing a stricter punishment against authorities who do not report these cases may improve the situation. Overall, my general understanding is that there is absolutely low regard for girls and women in India because of cultural views which is something very difficult to reform. These cultural views are embedded in these minds and changing the foundation of how these views are perceived can not possibly be done by enforcing stricter laws.
http://library.cqpress.com/cqresearcher/document.php?id=cqresrre2015041700&type=hitlist&num=11

Although this article was written in 2006, it discusses information that is still very relevant today. While the main concern of this article is how HIV is spreading quickly amongst those trafficked, I was able to incorporate the discussion of distrust of police authorities into my paper because that's a concept I would like to focus on. There are few reports of human trafficking incidences because there is corruption amongst the regulators of this offense.

The image below is a snippet of the outline I created for the HCP. When I was writing this outline, I had no intention of writing more about the Devadasis because I was uncertain of where it would fit in my paper. After conducting deeper research, it finally clicked that that would be the past evidence I would focus on. This topic eventually got its own paragraph in the final draft of the HCP!

There has been follow up on the success of this project, which will be even more reason to incorporate it into the recently drafted bill.
