To explore the different economic systems, students work in small collaborative groups and research a country. From research, they characterize its economic system. They then collaborate using Google Slides or PowerPoint to create a presentation of the information. They then create a movie from their presentation explaining the economy of the country and how its economic system is characterized and why.

Create Your Own Study Guide

I had students create their own study guide including vocabulary. I had many different options that they could create their own activity by creating Kahoot (love these!), a crossword puzzle, a comicbook strip using StoryBoard (with a free trial) or cartoon using PowToon (a lot of fun). They had to include WHY they chose certain questions that they think will be on the test. They presented it to small groups and then right before the test, I made sure to give them a study guide I created and they analyzed how well they did. I also used some of the students questions to give them a sense of ownership and made sure to go over those as a class before the assessment.

BoomWriter Books

Boomwriter has a writing system where students can write and vote on eachother's writing. The voting and who's writing it is is totally anonymous. An idea is formed and students write toward that idea. At the end, the teacher can publish the book. Its a great way for students to see and understand why writing is important. It also ties into showing how books can get published and how important it is to follow the writing process.

In the first marking period, students have to do research on a career that interests you. After giving them the worksheet and rubric for the assignment, the students went onto lucidpress.com and created a brochure about their chosen career. Then, i printed off a few copies of it and we had a mock job fair where they passed them out and told younger students about the job.

Quadratic Formula

In past years while teaching Algebra I, I have had students write their own songs to help them to remember the Quadratic Formula. There is a pretty annoying example that I like to use that sets it to the tune of Pop goes the Weasel. Now it would alleviate much of the performance anxiety for students to allow them to use one of the many free recording programs to record their creation to turn in rather than having to perform for the class. We could then publish their creations and become as famous as the students from Westerville South High School and all of their Math Parody videos.
