4. What is the author's purpose for writing the text?

The author's purpose for writing the text is to entertain the audience because it is a story written in the future and it gives us an insight of what could happen later on in life if we were all the same/equal, for example when the book says, "THE YEAR WAS 2081." and "They weren't only equal before God and the law. They were equal every which way. Nobody was smarter than anybody else. Nobody was better looking than anybody else. Nobody was stronger or quicker than anybody else."

3. Describe the tone and mood throughout the story.

The tone and mood at the beginning of the story is confused and dreary because it is at a different time and there are different laws; "THE YEAR WAS 2081, and everybody was finally equal. They weren't only equal before God and the law. They were equal every which way...All this equality was due to the 211th, 212th, and 213th Amendments to the Constitution, and to the unceasing vigilance of agents of the United States Handicapper General. " Later the tone and mood change from confused to suspenseful and sympathetic ; for example, I noticed that hazel said to George ,"I don't care if you're not equal to me for a while... "I don't mind it," he said. "I don't notice it any more. It's just a part of me." "You been so tired lately-kind of wore out," said Hazel. "; then the tone changed to suspenseful and tragic; one example of suspense is ,""Harrison Bergeron, age fourteen," she said in a grackle squawk, "has just escaped from jail, where he was held on suspicion of plotting to overthrow the government. He is a genius and an athlete, is under-handicapped, and should be regarded as extremely dangerous." and the tragic mood is given when Harrison and his lady are shot in mid air by Diana Moon Glampers, the handi cap general, and fall dead onto the ground; then the final mood is frustrated and sad because Hazel and George forgot what happened to Harrison and it had been like the entire story never happened to them .

Biance Calderon

2. What topics are covered in the text?

The topics that are covered in the text are the dangers of total equality. In the story, the citizens are tortured and are demanded by the government to wear handicaps so they can all be equal. The outcome is disastrous because everyone becomes slow and can't achieve individual achievement. Another topic in the story is the power of television. In the text, the government enforces their law by broadcasting whats happening in the society to the citizens and the television also sedates the minds of the citizens. An example of this would be when Hazel doesn't realize she is crying because the agents G men took her son away , but she is distracted by the ballerinas on the screen.

1. What are the top (5) main events/key facts in the text?

The top (5) main events are Harrison broke out of jail, Harrison gets shot by Diana Moon, people had to wear handicaps so everyone can be equal , Diana Moon threatens to shoot those who do not put their handicaps back on, and Hazel lost memory of the shooting of her son.

Suggestions

- When listing top five events, go in order from beginning of the story to the end

-When listing the topics, don't just use the internet, but I was looking to see issues regarding equality, totalitarian government, competition etc.

-When discussing the tone, I want you to explain how your evidence connects with the tone and mood words- there was more quote than explanation

-When talking about the author's purpose- I want to move away from PIE (persuade, inform, entertain) remember the article we read. Explore more deeply as a group, why you think Kurt Vonnegut wrote this story. What message is he trying to communicate to the audience?

Next time, I recommend, instead of working in isolation, finding a way to discuss or review the questions with the team
