This wasn't our tree fort, but it's pretty darn close to what we had. Built by ourselves on an empty lot in the neighborhood and dangerous as could be. We were almost always outside. We made up our own games with our own rules. It was our world to explore. And we liked exploring it with each other, face-to-face. If you were alone, it was with a book.

When I a child, I remember sliding down hills on cardboard boxes. The hill would be covered with dried up pine needles which made it easier for the box to slide. There was enjoyment when playing outside in nature. Today, it seems like children need something to keep them occupied (phone, I pad, or laptop) or the never ending phrase, "I'm bored", comes out.

A great deal of my childhood was spent in the canyons near my home. Mission Trails, pictured below, runs through my hometown and created the perfect environment to create new worlds with my friends.

Unfortunately, due to safety concerns and other factors, I do not see as many kids outside enjoying the beautiful San Diego landscape as I did when I was a kid.
