Columbus “discovers” the New World (1492)

Christopher Columbus set out on a voyage from Spain wanting to find a direct water route from Europe to Asia. Though he did not find the route, he accidentally stumbled upon the already inhabited America (New World). This "discovery" sparked the colonization of North and South America.
