The Interview of a immigrant: Riduan

Interviewer: Hi! Thank you for joining me today. Can you tell us about your experience at Ellis Island?

Immigrant: Hi! Yes, of course. I arrived at Ellis Island in the early 1900s. I was just a young person at the time, coming from Italy. My family hoped for a better life in America

Interviewer:What was it like when you first arrived at Ellis Island?

Immigrant: It was overwhelming. There were so many people, and everything felt strange we had just spended days on a crowded ship, and now we had to wait in long lines.I was nervous, not knowing what would happen next.

Interviewer: What did they do when you got to Ellis Island?

Immigrant: First, we were checked for diseases. They looked at us carefully to see if we were sick. I remember being scared because some people were sent away if they were too sick to enter. Then, we had to go through a few questions to prove we could work and support ourselves.

Interviewer: Were there any parts of the process that were especially hard?

Immigrant: Yes, the language was a big challenge. I didn’t speak much English, and it made things harder. We had to wait for a long time to get through the process, and many of us were worried we wouldn’t be allowed in. It was very stresful

Interviewer: How did you feel when you were finally allowed to enter the U.S?

Immigrant: It was a relief, but also a bit scary. I was happy to finally be in America, but I didn’t know what to expect. Everything was new. I had to start over, and that was both exciting and difficult.

Interviewer: Looking back, what do you think Ellis Island meant for you and other immigrants?

Immigrant: Ellis Island was the gateway to our future. It was the first step to finding a new life. But it was also toough. We all faced challenges, but we were hopeful that in America, we could make a better life for ourselves.

Interviewer: What happened after you left Ellis Island?

Immigrant: After I was allowed in, I went to New York, where I met relatives. Life wasn’t easy, but I found work. Slowly, things got better. The journey wasn’t over once we left Ellis Island, but we had hope.

Interviewer: Thank you so much for sharing your story with us!

Immigrant: You’re welcome! I’m glad to tell it.

Interviewer: So, where are you from?

Immigrant: I'm from Germany.

Interviewer: What's your name?

Immigrant: My name is Jeffrey.

Interviewer: Okay, let's begin.

Interviewer: Who is the President of the United States now?

Jeffrey: It's Donald Trump.

Interviewer: Good. Why did you want to immigrate to the USA?

Jeffrey: I wanted to start a new life here.

Interviewer: Where do you want to live here?

Jeffrey: In New York City.

Interviewer: Okay, what are your plans here?

Jeffrey: My plans are to start a new life in a new country and to become a footballer.

Interviewer: Here are some different questions.

Interviewer: Why did so many immigrants immigrate from Europe to the USA?

Jeffrey: Because of the First World War, many people were poor and their countries were destroyed.

Jeffrey: So many people immigrated from Europe to here, and when they had a job, they brought their families to the USA.

Interviewer: Okay. Many immigrants immigrated to the USA between the 1840s and the 1890s, but from where were they?

Jeffrey: Most of them were from Britain, Ireland, Scandinavia, and Germany.

Interviewer: That's right.

Interviewer: Can you tell me how long the voyage lasted?

Jeffrey: The voyage took seven to twenty-one days.

Jeffrey: But the conditions were very hard on board because they were poor and traveled third class.

Jeffrey: I have a friend whose mom was on a steamship back then.

Interviewer: Really? Do you know more things, or did she tell you some stories?

Jeffrey: Yes, she told me some things.

Jeffrey: She said it was very dirty at the bottom of the ship and that it was crowded.

Jeffrey: Many were sick, and some had bad diseases.

Jeffrey: After the long trip, doctors came on board to check them.

Interviewer: Was everyone sick?

Jeffrey: Some were.

Jeffrey: They slowly moved to the harbor and saw the very big Statue of Liberty.

Jeffrey: They were very proud because this was their new home.

Jeffrey: After the ship arrived in Manhattan, they went to Ellis Island for some more medical inspections and personal interviews.

Interviewer: Yeah, that's right. Tell me more.

Jeffrey: If the doctors found certain diseases or the immigrants were too weak, they sent them back.

Jeffrey: Some had to stay for days or weeks, but my friend's mom could go after a few hours.

Jeffrey: And so she immigrated to the USA, but she told me that was only the first step on a long journey.

Interviewer: Greetings stranger! Would you like to participate in our interview about the journey you had to take to get to the USA?

Arthur: Yes, sure... uhm ask away.

Interviewer: So, for the record, whats your name?

Arthur: Uh.. Arthur, Arthur is my name.

Interviewer: So Arthur, where did you come from?

Arthur: England, Bristol. Uhm... I came via boat.

Interviewer: Bristol? How was it back there?

Arthur: Decent. I mean the city and people were fine. But me and my family didn't have a job. Thats why we saved a lot of money to get me to the USA.

Interviewer: So do you have a job currently? Or are you still looking? And what about your family? Are they also coming soon?

Arthur: Uhm... Yes I currently have a job. I work as an aeroplane engineer. And Im currently working to get my family here.

Interviewer: Was it hard to leave your family behind?

Arthur: Yes. Very. Most of my family was sick. I just didn't want to leave them behind. But I got monthly letters from them so...

Interviewer: Oh im sorry to hear that. So, how was the journey? You said you came via boat?

Arthur: Yes. Uhm.. About three years ago, 1841. I came via boat. Uh... The boat was quite small, and way to many people were practically squeezed in one room. I remember the smell was awful, it was like we were trapped in a cage. Because so many were sick. And the food most definitely didnt help. First we had to travel to uhh.. Ellis island if i believe. I got asked for my background. And i was checked for diseases. Thankfully i was fine and got through quickly. After that we had to travel to the manhatten harbour. The journey took 16 days, i believe. That's not including how long it took to get from the U.K. To the USA. If I had to guess, it most likely took 5 weeks? Im not sure tho.

Interviewer: And do you like the USA? Or would you like to move back to Bristol in the future?

Arthur: Uhm.. Not move, but visit. I spend my childhood there so... But i wouldnt want to move. The job I got here just pays way to well.

Interviewer: Well i think we are dont here. Thank you for telling us your story. Goodbye!

Arthur: Have a nice day.

Zachs journey to America

Scene: talking on a podcast in the modern day life

Interviewer: "Hey Zach, My name is Dean , as you know i'll be asking some questions on your journey here to the USA"

Zach: "Mhm, yes I know."

Dean: "So Zach, How long ago did you immigrate to the USA from El salvador?"

Zach: "uhh, i think about 5 years ago? Im 15 years old and currently in my sophmore year of High school."

Dean: "Oh wow! A decade, those 10 years must have been tough, tell me Zach how did you immigrate here?"

Zach: "Well it was just me and my mom, back in El salvador i took english classes, so i could somehow communicate. We had to leave my two little sisters back in El salvador, due to them just being too young, and we did not have the ressources to bring them with. We got here illegally and it was really tough. Eventually as soon as we got documented we immediately flew my sisters here."

Dean: "Huh thats really sad. Could you tell me the journey to the US border?"

Zach: "we went by boat with other immigrants from the nearby villages, first we took some guys car and drove all the way to guatemala , then the... car broke down. And we abandoned it and hiked all the way to the shore of mexico. With that we had two choices, take another car and drive through mexico. Or through the gulf of mexico on a small boat. We took the second options due to it simply being safer, than driving through mexico. When we arrived in Houston Texas, a community of salvadorans took us in with open arms, kept us fed. And helped us get documented."

Dean: "Jesus... thats horrible, not the part where the salvadorans helped you!! How was the journey through the sea?"

Zach: "Absolutely horrible. It took about 8 days, and this is the quickest journey compared to other immigrants journeys. The currents were horrible. After a week, we barely had food. My mom tried to feed me well, since I was only 10 years old. For a day we simply ate nothing. And drank nothing, it was one of the worst moments of my life. But the green is greener on the other side."

Dean: "And yet youre still here standing strong as ever, your story is really inspiring and motivating Zach. A child like you shouldnt have gone through that. I got a question tho..., why didnt you go through mexico? I feel like it wouldve been safer, no?"

Zach: "uhm.......well. A reason we escaped our homeland was due to my dad owing some mexicans money. The moment they saw us we would have been.. gone. Thats the problem in most of those regions, gang violence there is just out of control. Another reason is you.. have to be submissive to the gang members that run our villages. The moment a word that goes against their political opinions comes out of ur mouth, you will get tortured."

Dean: "right.... I'm so sorry you had to even.. process that as a little child? Even now a 15 year old should not fear a country.

Zach: "Well.. lets leave the topic alone.."

Dean: "Thats perfectly fine. Well.. how are you now, I mean, the journey to getting better, recovering. Must've been really tough."

Zach: "I'm much better now, thanks to my mom who was beside me, helping me survive and my little sisters who always kept their chins up even though their journey here was really stressful. I made some friends, not much since.. as a highschooler i realized theres a huge bullying problem in the US. From middle school to highschool, i always got picked on for being an Immigrant and that I didn't belong here. No matter what they said, nothing could compare to the pain I endured. I never let their words get to me, since I know. The US is a place for everyone, even Immigrants like me."

Dean: "Wow zach, you.. genuinely are a brave and strong soldier. And honestly i agree with bullying being a big problem here, even I remember back in my days getting picked on for not bringing lunch."

Zach: "I'm really glad you understand.."

Dean: "heh. Anyway, how did your family feel about moving to this huge country."

Zach: "It was really hard on my mother. I get my strength from her. She suffered in silence, clearly feeling homesick. Not wanting to upset me and my siblings, she stayed quiet about how she actually felt. As I grew up she started to open up more, right now she's hosting a shelter for Immigrants like us, providing a safe sleeping place, food, hygiene anything to help them. My sisters are doing great, going to middle school and having sleepovers everyother day. I'll do anything to keep them safe and healthy."

Dean: "Zach youre more mature than the adult men i know in my life. Thats an amazing quality to have. So... what are your plans from now on?"

Zach: "Right now I'm taking classes such as politics, business class and so on. I desire to be a Politician and fight against this countries rotten parts, and fight for the Immigrants of the USA"

Dean: "Thats really interesting, well Zach I wish you and your family an easy and amazing life. The people listening are cheering you on Zach. Well see you guys on the next episode of "Deans yaps"!!"

Reporter: Hello, I'm a radio reporter from Radio NK 24! What's your name? I heard you're an immigrant from Eastern Europe, is that right?

Immigrant: Hello, my name is Heinz, and yes, I am an immigrant.

Reporter: Okay Heinz, I have a few questions for you.

Heinz: Yes, of course. Go ahead.

Reporter: Where are you from?

Heinz: I'm from Russia — specifically from Moscow.

Reporter: Wow. How long did your journey take?

Heinz: We traveled for six to seven days.

Reporter: That's a long time. So, moving on to the next question — why did you choose this country?

Heinz: Because I find it very beautiful and natural.

Reporter: Okay. What was the journey like?

Heinz: The journey was quite comfortable — much better than life back in my homeland after the First World War. The air there was bad, and we didn’t have much to eat.

Reporter: In which year did you arrive here?

Heinz: In 1919.

Reporter: Did you fight in the war yourself?

Heinz: Yes, for a few weeks. Then I broke my foot in a battle.

Reporter: How are you doing mentally?

Heinz: I still get scared when I hear gunshots, but otherwise, I’m doing fine.

Reporter: Do you have any family or friends here?

Heinz: Yes, my wife and my two children are with me. But my best friend Wilhelm died in the war.

Reporter: Oh, my condolences.

Heinz: Thank you.

Reporter: How do you feel?

Heinz: I miss my friend... I wish he were alive and here with us.

Reporter: Yes, I believe you, Heinz. What do you do here after the war?

Heinz: I worked as a house builder. I helped rebuild houses after the war — some of the houses you see here, I built myself.

Reporter: Okay Heinz, that was all the questions I had for you. Goodbye, and have a good day.

Let’s start.

Interviewer: What was it like when you went to Ellis Island as a teenager?

Immigrant (Wolfgang): Oh yes, I remember. I came to Ellis Island in 1900. The journey was very tough. There were thunderstorms, rain, and it was very stormy.

Interviewer: How long did it take you to get to Ellis Island? Do you still remember it?

Immigrant (Wolfgang): Yes, of course. It took us about 21 to 23 days.

Interviewer: What happened when you left the boat?

Immigrant (Wolfgang): I got off the boat, and then the doctors came right away and we were checked.

Interviewer: Did you go directly to Ellis Island or somewhere else first?

Immigrant (Wolfgang): No, we first went to Manhattan to be checked, but then we went to Ellis Island for more medical help.

Interviewer: Did everyone stay on Ellis Island, or did some have to return?

Immigrant (Wolfgang): No, not everyone stayed. Only about 20 percent stayed. The others were either too weak or sick and had to return.

Interviewer: How long were you and the others checked afterward?

Immigrant (Wolfgang): Some had to go through more checks for days or even weeks before they could stay.

Interviewer: Do you think it has been a long journey so far?

Immigrant (Wolfgang): Yes, it was long and hard, but now it has paid off.

Immigrant: Mine is good, thank you. How about yours?

Interviewer: Thanks for asking, mine is good too. May I ask you a few questions about your home country? Where are you from, what’s your name, and why did you immigrate to the USA?

Immigrant: Of course. My name is Joel. I’m from Cuba, and I immigrated to the US 16 years ago. My brother and I left because we were very poor and our home was destroyed. We traveled about 13 days by ship, which was really exhausting. Our parents wanted to give us a better chance in life.

Interviewer: That’s sad to hear. How old is your brother now, and how is he doing?

Joel: He’s doing very well. He’s 21 now, has a job, and his own apartment.

Interviewer: That’s great to hear. Where are your parents now? Are they still in Cuba, or have they also moved to the USA, maybe NYC?

Joel: They live with my brother here in New York.

Interviewer: Nice. How did you and your brother feel when you first immigrated to the USA?

Joel: At first, we felt a little sick and homesick, but it was okay. After some time, we got used to living here in NYC.

Interviewer: That’s good to hear. How old are you, if I may ask?

Joel: I’m 33 now.

Interviewer: Alright, thank you Joel for the interview. That’s all I wanted to ask. Do you have any questions for me?

Joel: No, I don’t have any questions.

Interviewer: Okay, have a nice day. Goodbye!

Joel: Thanks, goodbye!
