    • An acute contagious viral disease, with fever and pustules that usually leave permanent scars. It was effectively eradicated through vaccination by 1979.

    Smallpox is a serious, contagious, and sometimes fatal infectious disease caused by a virus called the variola virus. The disease gets its name from the Latin word for “spotted” and refers to the small pus-filled blisters that appear on the face and body of an infected person

    Signs and symptoms of smallpox may include sudden onset of high fever which may be recurrent. malaise (general feeling of unwellness) widespread skin rash – flat spots which change into raised bumps then firm fluid-filled blisters which then scab
