The Caribbean have seen its share of hardship and still to this present day we are still struggling with social issues which affect us daily.
In this portfolio I choose to present two issues which affect the Caribbean's young people
1.

IDENTITY FORMATION
It used to be fashionable to speak of the existence of something called a Caribbean identity, underlying this diversity or encompassing it. Nowadays we are inclined to accept the reality of many cultural identities co-existing within a society and more so within a region, the reality is diversity.

Four criteria I choose to describe my sense of identity:
Race- according to free online dictionary race is define as” A group of people identified as distinct from other groups because of supposed physical or genetic traits shared by the group. Most biologists and anthropologists do not recognize race as a biologically valid classification, in part because there is more genetic variation within groups than between them”. My race gives a sense of pride at times and has boost up my self-esteem yet again after going in depth with this course, all misconception about my ancestors which to some extent were mostly negatives in context. Growing up in a society which does not foster loving your skin color or the texture of your hair has damage our physic.
History with the experiences once encountered by my ancestors as stated from the unit” provides united forum of shared experiences for a large group of people” the key word is shared but in reality was these shared experiences ever pass on to the then generation, oh how would I loved to hear story my ancestors, what did they look, I often wonder how would I feel if I were among them, but then I would not have been present to enjoyed my freedom this day. I strongly believe our children needs to learn our history as I am of the belief it guides the direction of our future.

The Linguistic of the Caribbean has captivated my imagination, yet we speak different language and manage to have such unity amongst ourselves the Creoles and pidgins, which I speak a form of creoles called Patios and I very proud to speak it fluently, though in my country it is look down upon, I am now more appreciative dialect.

Geography— the Caribbean territory is ideally located with its temperate climate which is suitable for fertile soil and refreshing atmosphere, according to Jamaican artist Chronixx “we’ve got the sunshine, rivers and trees”.

According to David McFadden writing in the Jamaica Star, April 4, 2011, the phenomenon has reached such dangerous proportions”, a woman started to bleach her baby as reported to McFadden by a Dermatologist. His countrymen though are waking up to the issue and health officials are running warnings on local radio stations, putting up posters in schools, holding talks and handing out literature about the dangers.

The singer’s complexion has dramatically lightened in recent years and he even sings about his bleaching: ‘Look Pon Me’ contains the lines: “Di girl dem love off mi brown cute face, di girl dem love off mi bleach-out face.”

A somewhat disturbing one is the increasingly widespread practice of skin bleaching, as we are bombarded with lightening celebrities and cheap creams on the shelves. This subject is a controversial one and this article could delve into colonialism, shadism, colorism and a variety of “isms” as awkward questions about identity and race are raised, but the motive here is NOT to examine why we as a society even want to lighten our skin in the first place but instead to show how dangerous this practice is.

SKIN BLEACHING
Melanin is a complex polymer derived from the amino acid tyrosine and is responsible for determining skin and hair color, depending on the concentration present. So the more melanin you have, the darker you will be. Most skin-lightening treatments, which can reduce or block some amount of melanin production, are aimed at inhibiting e. Many treatments use a combination of topical lotions or gels containing melanin-inhibiting ingredients along with a sunscreen, and a prescription retinoid. Studies have revealed that over a third of the women in South Africa bleach their skin in hopes of obtaining “white skin” so they can be beautiful. One South African musician, Nomasonto “Mshoza” Mnisi, explained that she bleached her skin because she had a “passion for whiteness.”

DANCEHALL MUSIC Caribbean music genres are diverse. They are each syntheses of African, European, Indian and Indigenous influences, largely created by descendants of African slaves, along with contributions from other countries. With time Caribbean music such as dancehall have had great influence on the people of the islands, sad to say such influence have also been negative, in the portrayal of woman and the introduction of sex to the young generation. Dancehall music has become a symbol of explicit sexual imagery and violence. Dancehall is a “style of Jamaican popular music that had its genesis in the political disturbance of the late 1970’s ad became Jamaica’s dominant music in the 1980’s and 90’s”, ( C.J.Cooper)
