The Romans used concrete, which they invented. Concrete is a mixture of water, cement, and aggregate. They used concrete to make domes and arches. We use domes in lots of buildings today to convey importance and grandeur. They also created aqueducts, which carried water. They made bridges with their arches and we use both aqueducts and bridges today. Some that were made by the Romans are still functioning today. We also use roads, which they made from seven layers including concrete. Many of their roads still work and our highway system is somewhat similar.

Romans used a very similar alphabet and language to ours. Their alphabet was exactly the same, except that they didn't have a "j" or "w". English, while technically Germanic, is 60% Latin. We use plenty of Romance languages in everyday life, like in cooking. We also use Latin in most major religions. Latin America is called Latin America because of the influence of the Roman church, where they use Latin.

The Romans drew on Greek and Hellenistic influence to create art. They learned sculpture from the Greeks. Romans developed the bas-relief, a image projecting from a flat background. They also created mosaics, stone and tile art. They painted frescos onto walls in cities like Pompeii.

Law and Politics

Perhaps the biggest impact of the Roman legacy is their influence on law and politics. Executives can veto a law, which means I reject. They said that ideas and laws should apply equally to all, which we have in theory. We use their principle of innocent until proven guilty. The burden of proof rests with the accuser, and people are punished for action not reason. They had two consuls, similar to our president. They had a senate and a form of representative government for the citizen soldiers and plebeians, similar to how we have a house of representatives. They had 8 praetors, similar to our 9 judges. We both have legal codes and strict rules of citizenship.

Romans used Greek themes in their writing. Like the Greeks, they often wrote about morals and ideals. The Greeks had heros like Homer's Odysseus, the Romans had heros like Virgil's Aeneas, the founder of the Roman race. Romans wrote the history of Rome, both good and bad. We also document our history, although often with a glossed over past.
