The act that kicks off the infection of the Chikungunya virus is getting bitten by a mosquito. Mosquitoes are known to carry a lot of viruses, it just so happens that Chikungunya is one of them. Since the mosquito pearces the skin, this is how the virus overcomes the external barrier of skin.

The Chikingunya virus is of course... a virus, so it has a replication process that it will be eager to begin. Now, the immune systems first line of defense (after the skin) is the macrophages (white blood cell which specializes in engulfing and destroying foreign invaders), so they attempt to shut down the virus before it gets any worse, however they do not succeed. The interaction between the virus and the macrophages end up causing inflammation within the body they reside in, this is caused by the macrophages beginning to attack themselves. This distraction allows the virus to multiply. (Everything after this point is pretty much fictional).

After the B-cells are called they immediately start making antibodies to match the invader's antigen (kind of acts as an ID for an invader and induces the creation of antibodies). This antibody (blood protein produced to contrast an invader antigen) is soon released to bond to the antigen and in turn neutralizes the invader. However, since Chikungunya is a virus this does not work. Since it is replicating so fast and can not be taken down quite as easily due to it taking over existing cells in the body, Killer T-Cells (white blood cells specialized to kill host cells of the viruses and attempt to elimate the virus as well) are called.
