Much like in the play when Gwendolen's mother has to pick a man that meets her expectations. Girls as young as 18 in India can be arranged to marry for financial benefits for their families and not for love.

How the theme, "Marriage for love vs. Marriage as a Business Deal", is represented in the play is through the interactions between Jack and Gwendolen, and Algernon and Cecily. In the play Jack states, " I am in love with Gwendolen. I have come up to town expressly to propose to her". Jack believes in marriage is for love and if you really love someone then you should be with them. On the other hand, Algernon states that, " I don't see anything romantic in proposing... there is nothing romantic about a definite proposal". Algernon believe people marry for the benefits they get from the other person whether it may be lust of wealth. In real life, nowadays, people can marry for love. Whether it's in the church or they just found each other by coincidence, marrying for love, at first, is very common nowadays. But, if you look back on many years ago, men and women have been forced together by their parents and never really married for love and it was all for business.

And in this Lady Bracknell expressed immense disgust towards Jack as his family background didn't line up to what Lady Bracknell wanted for Gwendolen.

It is better to marry for business and not love. If you marry for business there are so many benefits. In the play The Importance of Being Earnest Lady Bracknell is interviewing Jack to see if he has a good enough background and things to be able to marry Gwendolen. Lady Bracknell says "The unfashionable side" meaning he needs to fix where he lives and move to the good side of the neighborhood. Marrying for business is good because it makes sure your are making sure you are comfortable for the rest of your life. Lady Bracknell shows this by wanting her daughter to be with a man of many traits.
