Throughout my life, I’ve often been labeled as “a mathematician.’ My teachers often said “You’re great at math, it'll take you far.” I enjoyed any type of problem solving of math and the way I could find any type of solution to that answer. But outside of school, math took on a whole new meaning; my parents’ furniture store. Working with my parents has taught me that knowledge is only as valuable as what we wanna do with it- an idea that pushed me to rethink how I viewed success and my own skill.

At the store, I was quick to adapt and  help with daily tasks like balancing books and setting the right prices to different types of furniture, which came naturally to me  like it was the breeze of the wind due to my background in mathematics. I’d always helped my father to do deliveries, see if we made sales, and see the inventory. It became a daily thing but then I noticed I got disconnected from mathematics that we learned in school to what type of mathematics I do in the store. ‘From doing algebra to geometry, I noticed I didn't really need to calculate everything.

At one point, I suggested to my parents we order an extra batch of popular items because my data made it seem like the right choice, But when that shipment  came and didn’t sell, I realized I hadn’t considered our customer base. It was my first moment that challenged my belief in numbers only. 

This experience taught me that knowledge whether it’s school math or regular math is most powerful when combined with willingness to learn from the mistakes of others and mine. My time at the store reshaped my view on success and taught me to think critically beyond those formulas and numbers taught in school and the regular math used in the daily base. It’s a lesson I plan to carry with me in college, where I hope to keep challenging assumptions and applying what I learned during working with my parents at their furniture.  

The furniture store is more than just a job to me; it’s a classroom, my home, and a vital part of my life. This store has shaped me into a different type of person, teaching me valuable lessons about responsibility, resilience, and the importance of human relationships. It has made me think deeply about my life, the impact of hard work, and how each interaction with a customer is an opportunity to grow and learn.
