I take it you know what it means?”
X nodded.
“And you are of Western European heritage, then?” the man asked.
“I guess,” X said. “We’re from Portland.”
“In Maine? Of course. I know many, many people staying there,” the man said, closing the door to his office, but staying where he had been standing. “Many interesting things are going on in Portland, these days.”
What a f**king creep. (Kinsella, 173)

At noon on the Friday following the judge’s decision, about three hundred people assembled outside the main doors of the district courthouse on Federal Street, and plenty of others gathered in Lincoln Park, directly across the street. In the crowd were X’s parents, as well as various siblings and relatives of Jimmy Cleary, Mark Upton, and Danny O’Heran. It was a sunny kind of day, not too cold, and none of us had bothered to obtain a permit, on purpose. The Portland police, as a result, were out in full force. A half-dozen of them had donned riot gear.
They look f**king ridiculous. Morons. (Kinsella, 223)

“Hello?” he called out.
“Back here,” said the familiar voice. “Near the stage.”
X walked along the bar slowly and rounded the corner. There, slouched at a table with two chairs, under a single light, sat the man they called Northman.
He waved X toward the empty seat.
“Hello, Chris.”
X slid into the chair and looked at the man, his uneven eyes black. “Detective Murphy,” he said. “I didn’t see the desk guy on my way in.” (Kinsella, 285)

Recipe for Hate is told in a first-person perspective by X’s best friend, Kurt. Throughout the story, first-person personal pronouns like “I, me, and my” are used which further proves this. In the first page of Chapter 1, we see the first use of personal pronouns in the sentence; “Many of us preferred to come and go through the door to the alleyway, because we were nervous about the regulars.” (Kinsella, 11)

Sentences like these are incredibly prevalent in the novel, which contributes to the story and makes it feel like it is being by the character himself. It is almost entirely Kurt recounting the story, with the exception of the brief switch to third-person during the trial.

A few more examples of the first-person POV in the book;
• My own name, by the way, is Kurt Lank. My friends call me Kurt Blank or Point Blank. This is our story, as I remember it, about what happened to all of us in Portland that winter. (Kinsella, 25)
• I didn't agree with him, but whatever. Trying to change X's mind was impossible, pretty much. (Kinsella, 70)
• The “bland, satanic monoculture” of the place, as I put it in one tune, provided us with tons of material. (Kinsella, 82)
