http://www.the519.org/programs/category/new-to-canada

The 519 is a downtown Toronto centre that primarily serves the LGBTQ community. It is open to helping anyone and has many different programs and services available. The 519 has multiple programs available for newcomers to Canada. These programs include: A Taste of French, Among Friends LGBTQ Refugee Support Group, Basketball Basics, Breakthrough LGBTQ Newcomer Network, Emerge LGBTQ Mentorship Program, Newcomer Settlement Service, Newcomer Youth Mentorship, Next Steps, and Youth Engagement Program. I feel that the Newcomer Settlement Service would be extremely beneficial to newcomer parents. They would provide “one-on-one assistance” and could help parents navigate the school system and any potential questions they might have. This in turn helps students feel more secure since they can also attend these sessions and have their questions answered. The 519 ensures that services are always available and provided in multiple languages. The 519 also has programs for children and youth, so that an entire family can be supported during their transition to Canadian life.

TDSB: Caring and Safe Schools Initiatve

The Caring and Safe Schools program is a TDSB initiative to ensure that all students and staff are working together with community partners to be able to create a safe learning environment for all. It is first identified by the board that everyone should know that they have the right to be in school to learn. With initiatives a part of the Caring and Safe Schools Initiative make efforts to protect all students from bullying and harassment. The board website states, “When a school has a positive climate, all members of the school community feel safe, included, accepted and actively promote positive behaviours and interactions with each other…To help build positive school environments, we have a number of prevention programs and caring and safe schools initiatives…All students are guided by the Board Code of Conduct and are expected to demonstrate respect for human rights and social justice.”. When the Caring and Safe Schools programming is implemented and adhered to, students will then feel comfortable being part of the larger school community by focusing on their learning and the students will collectively work towards uplifting one another to encourage learning and academic growth. The board encourages students to help each other through programs like peer meditation, counselling, and classroom discussions.

http://www.tdsb.on.ca/Elementary-School/Caring-Safe-Schools/Caring-Safe-School-Committee

- Safe and Positive Spaces: The TDSB has a positive space initiative that is part of Ontario’s Equity and Inclusive Education Strategy. The campaign is one way we make our buildings safe, inclusive, and welcoming places that are respectful of gender and sexual diversity.

https://peopleforeducation.ca/public-education-in-ontario/#howitworks

People for Education is an organization that works to support positive change in education as well as build connections between parents, teachers and administration. There website is a wonderful tool for parents new to the province to learn about the structure and function of the Ontario school system. It provides information about all levels of Ontario public education (i.e. early childhood, elementary, secondary, and French language), the roles of different stakeholders within the system, as well as provides tips for parents. Additionally, it also provides parents of secondary school students information on course selection and graduation requirements. I believe this website serves as a great tool for newcomer parents as it provides them with vital information so they can understand what their child’s educational experience will look like, as well as provides the know how to ensure their child is receiving the tools and resources needed to be successful.

http://www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/parents/multiLanguages.html

On the Ontario Ministry of Education website there is a catalogue of information resources meant to help support student learning at home, as well as provide information regarding the different facets of the boards composition. However, what really makes this tool accessible and useful for parents whose first language is not English, is that these resources are available in 25 different languages. By making these important fact sheets multilingual, newcomer parents can learn more about their child’s education as well as feel more welcome and included in their new home. Consequently, by supporting parent’s involvement students will hopefully be receiving the educational support they need both at school and at home.

TDSB Tropicana Club
There is a strong Caribbean community in the TDSB and the board has recognized the different needs of the students, their strengths and weaknesses.
The program runs once a week at lunch time, targeting students from the islands and other at-risk boys. (Students were selected by the V.P.).
A program coordinator comes into the school and teaches the students cooperative games, introduces them to positive Canadian sports role models (Argo footballers, Canadian rappers/artists) and provides new experiences (Blue Jay game, making raps/music, learning ping pong, etc.).
Any program that allows for positive role modelling and opportunities for new experiences, will allow students from any background to feel at home and part of the community.

TDSB Newcomer Program
Due to the influx of Syrian newcomers, the TDSB and our school created a program to integrate students into Canadian culture and the expectations of school.
The program runs twice a week, during the school day and after school. During the school day, parents are invited to come and learn and play with their child, with the program coordinator, ESL teachers, interpreter and settlement worker. After school, the students are taught cooperative games, cooking lessons, and Canadian activities (skating, CN Tower, Raptors game, etc.)
It is a great program to help students become familiar with their surroundings, learn different social skills, and explore new experiences.

Resources for Newcomer Families
I don't currently work with a school board so I will share general resources I have discovered online.
The first is RfSC (Ready for School Connects). It is a program that is designed to help students and families adjust to their new life and new school environment. It offers families language, health and educational resources and aid. The only problem with this program is that it costs money.
http://www.rfsc.ca/about-rfsc/description/

The second resource I found is the Welcome Here website, it is a site that also offers many resources, links and support to newcomer families. It has links about school life, health aid, educational resources, parenting advice and much more.

Instructions
Choose and share 1-2 services, resources, or community support staff and briefly indicate how it can help newcomer parents (and in turn, student learning).
Collaboratively compile a list of useful multi-lingual (or monolingual) resources or programs to share with parents at varying points of the school year or their child's academic career (K-12). This could include local resources from school board's, cities, cultural organizations, places of worship, settlement groups, etc. These programs or resources could be for their child or for themselves to learn more about Ontario schools.

Ontario School System resources

This online resource offers students and parents multiple opportunities to learn about Ontario schools as well as support the newcomers. The website gives a breakdown of what the schools are like in Ontario and the different immigration associations they are partnered with. The resources gives a long list of help for students in grades K-12 and even after high school. It gives families counselling opportunities and even how to transport to schools. They also give a list that shows what programs could help parents and families. If you keep clicking into the local immigration partnership website, you can see events, services, councils that all would help students and parents! They even provide english language classes!

This is an online resource that helps families to understand the Ontario school system. The secondary school guide is available in English, French, and Arabic. The guide covers what subjects students must take, student health, how classes are taught, how to register for school, and how parents can help their children to succeed. This resource has depth and could help parents who speak the above three languages learn what to expect when their child attends an Ontario school.

The 519
http://www.the519.org/programs/category/new-to-canada
