The weapons improved faster than the medical care. Doctors had little knowledge on how infections and diseases spread. There was little hygiene between soldiers and doctors. Doctors often wore bloody clothes and did not clean there tools between operations. Because of this more soldiers died from infections and diseases than from their battle wounds.This would've affected a soldiers life and our country's future. Elizabeth Van Lew was a successful spy for the union. She accessed multiple Confederate war plans and was never arrested because she pretended to be mentally ill. She was later named as a hero for the union. This impacted her because now she was a big hero to a lot of people and really set a new standard for woman. No one expected a women to really step up and be a big contribution to the war.
