But of course it's not politicians who account for the bulk of the business at Kevin's. In fact, it's not even the townsfolk. After all, it's not every week that someone in Totowa gets married. No, the majority of the store's business comes from the rest of New Jersey. Each business day, people from every corner of the state stop in at Kevin's to pick out that all-important little piece of jewelry. The reason? Kevin's customers say the store has impeccable service - and that leads to an incredible amount of word-of-mouth business. Store owner Marv Littlefield - whose great, great, great grandfather started the business - says that just last week a visitor from Tempe, Arizona showed up to buy a ring in the store. That customer had been referred by a cousin living in eastern Pennsylvania whose family members had purchased nearly a dozen rings at Kevin's in the past 100 years.

Kevin's has certainly seen its share of challenges in more than a century in business. But hurricanes, the IRS, divorce, race riots, and even an earthquake have all failed to stop Totowa's most prolific and iconic business. But according to Littlefield, one thing may just finally spell the end for the little shop on the square. The business that has been passed down from generation to generation within Littlefield's family - going all the way back to great, great, great grandpa George Hirsch - will some day run out of inheritors. Going back three generations, Marv Littlefield's family has produced only one child per generation. And Marv and Mary Littlefield have no children.
