Things I learnt

When I first registered this course I was expecting that it would be another uninformative core course, even thought I was interested in what I could possibly learn in "Languages of the World". However, now that the semester is done, I have learned a lot about different languages, their history and the writing systems and structure such morphology, syntax, phonology, etc...

- I learned a lot about language families, I always thought French and English would be part of the same family and never did I ever think German would be closer to english than french is which was chocker to me
- Another thing related to languages that was knew to me was how much dialects Chinese has; Mandarin, Cantonese, Shanghainese, Taiwanese and much more. To the point where people from different dialects wouldn't even understand each other. Even Mandarin itself is divided into 4 separate dialects
- I also learned about languages that I didn't know existed like Zulu, a bantu language spoken in southern Africa. I also learned about the tick language (I think this is what it's called :D) a tonal language that consists of different ticks sounds.
- I also found the language of lying and language of deception a really interesting topic to learn about. Because you always hear that oh she was stuttering she must be lying, she never looks me in the eyes so she's lying, oh he was smiling when he responded he must be hiding something. However, you never really think of it in a linguistic way such as " oh he doesn't refer to himself and disassociating himself so he he be lying". It was very fun to learn about it because I found out that when lie I usually do disassociate myself, for instance if someone asks me did you talk about me behind my back I'd always say who talked about you? No one talked about you, instead of saying no I didn't talk about you 😅.
- The presentations were also very informative, I got to learn about language and diplomacy, language in Disney and last but not least language and psychological disorders. It was really fun doing the presentation because I got to learn a lot about how a person's speech tend to be altered or affected by psychological disorders.

Something non academic related that I gained from this course is meme making, I was always a very bad meme maker even though I LOVED reading memes and they made me laugh the hardest. Nevertheless, I never knew how to make ones myself and when I first took a look at the syllabus and discovered that I had to make 10% worth of memes I was a little scared not going to lie. I watched people make them and I was like wow how am I going to top that because memes making making doesn't come naturally to me I had to like think a lot about it in order to make one. Your memes ya Dr were the best you're so talented when it comes to making them I don't know how it comes so naturally to you msa. Furthermore, seeing your memes repeatedly did help me in making mine fa thank you for bettering my sense of humor and creativity in meme making 😂
