Going from having a whole sentence, to the words, to the beginning sound of a word(onsets) and the last sounds of a word (rimes) to the syllables. For example, if you have the word fish, the onset would be /f/ and the rime is /ish/.

These skills are the beginning stage for students to become good readers. These skills also provide children with a way to access the written form; phonics. If your children can understand that words can be divided into individual sounds and that sounds can be blended(combined) into words, they are able to use letter-sound knowledge to read and build words.

How these lead to phonics?

Phonics is the ability to recognize letter-sound correlation and that letters have a pattern to spell words. Having a strong phonological and phonemic awareness leads to becoming good readers and writers. This is because children will be able to recognize the letters and their sounds and be able to put them together to create/read/write words.

This is super fun and easy to get your child hearing the sounds(phonemes) that are in words.

1. Print this sheet
2. Have your child say each sound they here in the word.
Ex: If there is a picture of a dog
your child should say d/o/g (each sound in the word).
Note some words may be harder than others. If there is a picture of a cloud the sounds are c/l/ou/d. There may be 5 letters but only 4 sounds.
3. As he or she says the sounds have them place or slide a penny or bingo chip for each sound (Goldfish is super fun to get the children involved and they can eat it once they re done :))
