Palacio, the protagonist is August Pullman. In the beginning of the novel, Auggie is timid. Auggie states, "Mom sat down in a chair in front of Mr. Tushman's desk, and even though there was  another chair right next to hers, I decided to stand besides her" (Palacio 19). This proves how he is timid and shows how he is nervous by just sitting with his future principal. Although, Auggie was popular towards the end. Auggie states, "It was like I was one of them. They all called me "little dude" now- even the jocks" (Palacio 282). People were treating him like they never did before. They actually liked him and weren't afraid of touching him like they used to. Thus, Auggie is a timid character that develops into a popular student towards the end of the novel. Julian was also an important character in this novel. He acted as the antagonist. Julian was a very rich kid to the point where he was spoiled. Jack states, "Julian, who everybody knows is so rich, was like, 'I hate that I have to go back to Paris this Christmas. It's so boring!'" (Palacio 149). Julian is upset about going to Paris which is obviously really expensive and really fun. The fact that he doesn't want to go proves that he is very spoiled. In addition, Julian is also rude and disrespectful. Auggie states that Julian was writing mean notes to him like, "...Freak! And another said: get out of our school, orc!" (Palacio 208). This all took place during the war between Jack and Julian which was caused by Jack punching Julian when he was talking bad about Auggie. The notes prove how Julian was being rude to Auggie and disrespecting him. Palacio, there are many great themes. One of the many is, "It's not enough to be friendly, you have to be a friend." This doesn't mean that it's better and helps a lot, especially when the person has a disability. A character named Jack did this to help the protagonist, Auggie, who has a face deformity and goes to school for the first time in his life in fifth grade. He knew no one but there were some kids who were friendly but very few who stepped up to the next level to become his friend. Jack states, "Finally, August was like, 'Dude, we have to do this.' So we went to his house after school" (Palacio 180). Many kids were scared to talk to him or bump in to him in the halls by accident but Jack was not only friendly to him but he was also a friend who chose to hang out with Auggie. He didn't care about Auggie's face. He cared about him as a person. Palacio, the main characters are August, Mom, Dad, Via, Jack, Summer, and Julian. This novel takes place in present day New York. Auggie, the protagonist, has to deal with his face deformity and starting school for the first time in fifth grade. At the beginning , when he is first starting school, a kid named Julian is mean to him. Jack, one of the three kids chosen to give Auggie a tour of the school and be nice to him, was one of Auggie's best friends even though he didn't sit with him at lunch. He did sit with this girl named Summer who had chosen to be Auggie's friend. During Halloween, Jack talked bad about Auggie with Julian to try to fit in and be cool and fit in. Auggie witnessed this and stopped being friends with Jack. Julian was talking bad about Auggie again so Jack punched him in the face. A war starts between all the boys in the school because of when Jack punched Julian. Jack figures out why Auggie stopped talking to him and says sorry to him. They become friends again. At the end of the school year, the students went to the Broarwood Nature Retreat. Auggie and Jack encounter a group of seventh graders that make fun of Auggie's face. Thats when Amos, Henry, and Miles jump in to help them and then a fight happens. When they arrive back home, his parents and sister find out. Back at school, everybody knows and like Auggie and he is known for the fight. At the graduation, August receives the Beecher Award.
