The Romans controlled the majority of the Western world from 55 AD (CE) to 100 AD (CE), a span of over 45 years. After conquering many cultures, Rome began to 'Romanise' and established a government. People began to live in prosperity with their cultures and religions accepted. The Roman Empire was also protected and enlarged by its army consisting of 5,000 men who were disciplined, highly equipped and trained. Rome's cultural diversity is still seen in present day and is evidenced through its architecture, languages and people. Additionally, Latin was the official language of the Roman Empire, whilst Greek was the language of Scholars. However, the majority of people continued to speak their local languages. Rome was strongly influenced by Greek mythology and the practice of Emperor worship. Most people living in Rome were polytheistic - worshipping many different gods and demigods. For this reason, there were many temples, shrines and places to worship. Furthermore, Vehicles, animals, ships and road transport were used to transport people and goods around the Empire. Marine transport, though unpredictable and dangerous, was suitable for longer distances and heavy goods. The main regions of the Roman Empire, stretched from Britain in the west, to Mesopotamia in the east. Rome was the main city of the Empire's region as well as Alexandria, Antioch and Ephesus.

The conversion of the Roman Jew Saul to the Christian Paul in 37 CE was highly significant because it shows us the true meaning of conversion. Conversion isn't just about changing religions but it’s a change of way. Paul learnt to have an acceptance of Jesus as the Messiah and gave up his career of persecuting Christians of their faith. After his experience of the road to Damascus, he learnt from his mistakes and began to live in the way of the Lord. It is evident that Paul has had a change of way and heart because he travelled thousands of kilometres across the Mediterranean to spread the word of God and convert others. This began the Foundational Figure of the First Christian Communities; which Christians continue to uphold and learn.

During the years 49 - 52 AD (CE), Paul travelled on his second journey around the Mediterranean. He passed the communities of Athens, Corinth and Ephesus and travelled on a straight path. His companion was Silas and together they spent time in Corinth and Athens, which were the two major centres of Greek culture and learning. This was where Paul would preach to everyone, speaking to Jews in synagogues, everyday people in the marketplaces and learners in the lecture halls. The message was always the same - that Jesus was part of the Christian community and that everyone should place their faith into the risen Lord.

Paul's letters, the Epistles, were written to maintain contact with the Early Christian communities that he visited to help them continue to grow and proclaim their faith in Jesus. St Paul believed that faith in Jesus would guarantee followers a 'share in his life' (John 3:16). There were 13 letters and the main message in his letters was the death, resurrection, and lordship of Jesus Christ. In the themes of Hope and Joy, Body of Christ and Salvation, Paul exclaimed that 'Christians are called to be joyful and happy', 'Everyone has to practice forgiveness and love,' and 'Everyone is equal as we have all sinned'.

Jesus and the majority of his initial believers, certainly the Apostles, were Jews. The Jewish faith was bound by Mosaic law which included the worshipping of God and Jesus, diet due to religious beliefs and circumcision. Circumcision was a large issue within the faith because Paul and Barnabas disagreed upon the practice. Paul believed that gentiles should not be held accountable to Mosaic law and in Acts 15: 7 - 11 he stated that circumcision was an unnecessary 'yoke' on their necks. However, it is believed that the tradition of circumcision, together with faith, bought followers closer to God and Jesus.

Paul was an inspirational man, who taught the message that ‘God can use anyone’. I believe this means that God cares about everyone and he willingly gives us multiple chances, that we don't deserve, to give us time to change and show growth in learning from our mistakes. (1 Timothy: 13 - 14) "13Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man, I was shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and unbelief. 14The grace of our LORD was poured out on me abundantly, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus." When God chose the man who persecuted Christians, Paul, to start a missionary and spread the word about Him, he showed us that we should be encouraged to know that he can also choose us.
