I have already learned quite a lot of German so far. I can say complete sentences like The man ate bread, or You are a woman. I also know greetings and how to tell people my name. So far, I have completed 4 things on Duolingo, which has helped me a lot to learn the difference between ein and eine. They both mean the same thing, but the first one is masculine and the second one is feminine. I have learned that there are many words like this in the German language, which makes it different from ours. I learned that everyone knows how to say kid in German, if they can say Kind.

This week I learned some more important words, like suchen, which means to look for. I learned the word for OK, which is abgemacht, which is a good word to know, if you think an idea is a good one and you want to agree wit it. I have also learned a sentence, which is Die Arbeit ist schwer, which means The work is hard. As I learn more words, I might be implementing them into my progress reports, and add their definitions at the end of the progress report. I might try to do a full progress report in German by the time the 6th week comes around, because I will have learned a lot. I learned that all nouns are capitalized, no matter where they are in a sentence, which I think should be put into our language. I am also surprised it isn't because our language is of German origins.

So far, I have only learned simple words, but they are good ones. Junge, which means boy, Madchen, which should have an umlaut above the a, and means girl, wasser, which is pronounced vasser, and means water, trinkt, which means drinks, is drinking, or are drinking. I have also learned multi word phrases, like ich bin, which is I am, Du bist, which is you are, er/sie/es ist, which is he/she/it is, wir sind is we are, ihr seid is you are, sie sind is they are, and sie sind which is also you are (formal). Brot means bread, which is a good word. Ein/eine is a, as in a bird. Und means and, like to say Wasser und Brot, or Water and Bread. Ist means is, and Es means it. Bin is feminine and bist is masculine, but they mean the same thing.

Sources I used this week are Duolingo, which I will be using every week, a book called German Bilingual Dictionary, which my mom got from the library, and another book called German Dictionary for Beginners with New German Spelling, which my mom got from the library as well. These two books have helped a lot, with spelling and pronunciation, which is very important when learning to speak a new language. They also have pictures, to show what they are talking about, instead of just listing things, which helps a lot for me, because I am a mostly visual learner. I might be using these books for the nest couple weeks, just like Duolingo, but I am also going to check more out from the library to help me learn more.

This week, I made it to the phrases part in Duolingo. This is what I am the proudest of so far in the passion project. There were a lot of lessons leading up to it, and some of the lessons were pretty hard, but it has been worth it so far. I have actually made it past phrases, and I am 10% fluent in German, which is a big accomplishment for me. So far, this has been really fun, and I have learned a lot, so it will pay off if I go to live in Germany. I have learned how to say goodnight, hello, goodbye, thank you, see you soon, and welcome, to name a few. They are gute nacht, Hallo, Danke, bis bald, and willkommen. I have mastered a lot more skills in Duolingo as well, like Phrases, Basics 1 and 2, and The. Once I get 30 Lingots, I am going to learn Idioms and Proverbs, which are an important part of language.

I am accomplishing a lot this week, and I am very proud of my progress, because I am surprised I decided to stick with learning/ becoming fluent in the German language, I think it will be cool to speak another language, and by the end of six weeks, I think I will be 40 to 50 percent fluent, based on my current progress. But I think I will keep learning German after that, because I want to be fluent. I would try to write/ type a full sentence, but I haven't learned enough about how each word is used, which I should learn next week.

This week, I have still been learning from the books and Duolingo. It seems like those three things are all I really need, and they are all really easy to use. The biggest obstacle I have had to overcome was finding more resources to use instead of Duolingo only, so I have some diversity and something else to compel me to keep going, and to not give up and stick with learning German, and it has really worked, extremely well. I am more motivated to learn about the German language and everything about it because I have 3 different resources I can use for information. Although it is harder to use the books, because they don't say how pronounce the words, they are still a great resource.

Some more obstacles I have had to overcome are the pronunciation, spelling, and sentence making. The pronunciation was very difficult, because I have never heard or spoken German before, and how they said things was, and still is, very difficult for me. I am still hoping to be able to say a couple of phrases by the end of six weeks, but they won't be said well if I can't pronounce my words and letters of the German language. Spelling has also been quite difficult, because the way a word is pronounced and the way it is said is so different, and it is very confusing, at least for me. Sentence making has been the hardest, because I haven't learned all of the words that are Masculine and or Feminine.

I am pleased that Kyan selected learning a foreign language for his passion project. That is a subject I feel we are missing by doing an online school.

I have watched Kyan utilize Duolingo and 2 different German language dictionaries to learn to speak German.

He shared some of the words and phrases he's learned, such as Katze which mean cat. (I learned they capitalize all nouns.) That is different. And the word for my favorite hot beverage is tee in German, pronounced the same, but spelled different.

I have not had any experience with the German language. It is odd to hear him speak it. He tells me it is easier to learn and speak than he expected. He feels there is a lot similarities in the spelling and pronunciation between German and English words. Listening to him, they sure sound different to me.

I am proud of the time Kyan invests each week to improve his German vocabulary without parental prompting or reminders. And to see the pride he has in his own progress is especially heartwarming.

I hope he continues his interest in learning foreign languages.

This week, I finally got to learn Idioms and Proverbs, and it took a very long time to get all 30 Lingots, because they come in small amounts. Some of them made no sense, but I got through the lesson eventually. I also learned food, animals, Acc. case, and Intros. I am looking forward to next week, because I get to learn Plurals and Adjectives, which are a big part of every language. It is hard for people to understand you if you don't know your plural words or any adjectives. If I finish those 2, I have Not, Question, Present 1, Clothing, and Nature to learn, and they are in that order. I am really looking forward to learning Nature, but it is the last lesson, and i will have to put in a lot of hard work to get to it. In the end, it will be well worth the hard work, because I will be able to say many things in German, even though my goal is to learn around 15-20 phrases. Next week, I am going to redo the lesson Phrases a few times, to memorize a bunch of phrases for when the time comes to share.

This week, I just worked on phrases. That is all I have been practicing because i really want to a good job on Tuesday on my presentation. I am going to do it on Google Slides. I think I am going to make it 6-7 slides long, and each slide will have quite a lot of information, so anyone that is paying attention and or wants to learn about my passion project will learn something. If it isn't long enough when I go through my presentation, I will add some more slides to make it longer. Throughout the weekend, the rest of today, and on Monday, I am going to be practicing, because I really want to be ready for this, and not stutter or be at a loss for words when the time comes, because that happens when I speak in front of anyone, even just 5-6 people. Unless I know them well, then I am comfortable around them. I don't really know what else to write about this week, so I am probably going to do more lessons on Duolingo so I at least have something else to write about.

Eventually, my goal is to be fluent in German, and the only way is to complete the Duolingo German section, by doing all of the sessions/ lessons. The books I have been using haven't helped as much as Duolingo has, but I am going to use them a lot because they are full of good phrases, which is what I need to learn for the presentation of my passion project. The pictures are the easiest this week, because I can screenshot my presentation, or at least the start, for one of them and I can use the lesson Phrases for another one.
