https://padlet.com/rgoisovich/Found

Reflection on Make: I pulled phrases from several poems ("I had a guinea golden" - "Nothing Gold Can Stay" - "Those Winter Sundays" - "Moment of Inertia" - "O Captain, My Captain!") and a quote by Gandhi. I loved using the Padlet to create this poem; it will be easy for students to do this, and having each phrase as a separate note really forced me to think about the choices I made for the placement and the overall effect it will have on the meaning of the poem.

I chose to use Piktochart. At first, this website seemed daunting - there are so many options and several of them require a paid membership. However, once I started playing around with the tools, I was able to catch on quickly and enjoyed using it for this task. Embedding a video was really easy as well.

I don't personally enjoy creating Infographics, but I do think this is a great option for students. I can see them using this for research during a unit or to demonstrate understanding of a literary work using one of the critical lenses. If used across contents, it can help students make connections between contents.

If Piktochart is BCPS approved, it will be a valuable tool for students.

I love the idea of having students create a story together and then discussing how their additions contribute to the unified whole. This can be a great way to teach character development, theme, structure, etc. Using the online PPT tool is simple but effective, and I can see students adding graphics to enhance the story or using animations to emphasize certain words. When the story is finished, I will be excited to go back and read it from beginning to end to see the progression of ideas!

The quote wall via Padlet can be used in a variety of ways as well! I enjoyed adding my quote about writing and like that I can comment on the already posted quotes. This can be a nice tool to use for literature circles or Socratic seminars.

Reflection on Make: Even though the site is recommended for younger students, I think all students can use this tool. I wish there were more options as far as features go, but for a basic resource for students to demonstrate understanding of concepts such as dialogue, theme, character development, etc. it's pretty neat. It was definitely easy to use. I've used StoryBoard That in my classroom before, and my students definitely enjoy this tool. Out of the two options, I would pick StoryBoard That. It's more interactive and has more options.

Make #6: Equity and Inclusion

Reflection on Make: I enjoyed Make #6 the most because of the process it required participants to go through. For this Make, we had the opportunity to revisit our previous Makes and see them with new eyes.

All of the images I selected represent a pressing issue in society, but I connected these issues to my core values and used abstract nouns to represent each topic. The first image I selected is of a student I mentored while she was in high school. This student struggled to complete high school and almost dropped out senior year; however, she persevered and made it through, presenting me with a framed picture of us at her graduation ceremony. Being introduced to her family was one of the proudest moments of my life. Instead of the term "at-risk" being associated with her, I associate the term "success." The second image is of my husband and father. Last Friday, my husband donated a kidney to my dad. He saved his life. This is "love." The third image represents how our treatment of animals reveals who we are. For this image, I chose to use the word "kind." The next image is of another mentee of mine who was diagnosed with cancer after she graduated from high school. The first in her family to go to four year college, this student had to fly home her freshman year and go through chemo. She passed away two years ago this March. Instead of associating the term "cancer" with her, I choose to associate "courage." The final image is of the staff at Dundalk High wearing shirts to support the student in the previous image while she went through chemotherapy. As teachers, I believe the most important core value we must have is "hope." As not just an educator but as human beings, we must choose to see beyond ourselves and support one another. Only then will the world be a "beautiful place."

This Make can be a wonderful culminating project for students. This is my first time using PIXLR Express, and the tool is easy to use with a variety of options. It was effortless to save my project and upload it here. It also provides the option of using images from online, uploading images from a computer, connecting to Facebook and more .

I am a resource teacher in the Secondary ELA Office. I want to include several of these options in 9-12 to help students find their voices and to share their voices with one another. The course also provided a different way in which to look at the purpose of each writing assignment we require our students to do. As we revise curriculum this summer, I hope to incorporate this new learning into some of the writing requirements in high school.

The Make that really stands out to me is Make #6. Having students use writing as a way to think about equity and inclusion is invaluable. I also like that this Make required me to revisit my previous Make. We need to reinforce with our students that writing is a process.
