Old Harry Rocks is directly east of Studland, about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) northeast of Swanage and about 3 miles (4.8 km) south of the major cities of Poole and Bournemouth. To the south are the chalk cliffs of Ballard Down, most of which are owned by the National Trust. The cliffs can be seen from the southwest coast section of the Dorset trail.There are different stories about the name of the rocks. One legend says that the Devil (traditionally known euphemistically as "Old Harry") slept on the rocks. Another local legend says that the rocks were named after Harry Pey, the infamous Poole pirate, whose ship hid behind the rocks waiting for merchant ships to pass by. Another legend says that a storm prevented a Viking raid in the 9th century, and that one of the drowned, Count Harold, turned into a chalk pillar.
