In today’s digital age is it so important for teachers and students to be good digital citizens and understand the things that they are seeing on the internet. The first of the three competencies that i want to talk about is being able to evaluate sources critically. In short this means that students are able to make sure that the source they are using is credible. This is huge for students to make sure that the information is from a source that is actually reliable and is giving good information. An example of this would be taking information from a basketball article when playing soccer rather than taking information from a soccer article. In this scenario you would want the soccer article since you are teaching soccer, not a basketball article. This skill will help students to have information that is actually applicable to what they are studying.

The second skill i think of is strong research skills. If students do not know how to look up the information properly we as educators cannot expect them to get credible answers. Having good research skills is like knowing how to look for peer reviewed articles, or having quality platforms to take information from. Without good research the students will probably not learn anything.

Lastly I believe it is important for students to synthesize data. This means making sure the data they have acquired will support each other, and students will be able to pull the information together and make it make sense. This is important so we are not information dumping about unimportant things to the research that is being done.

All of these skills go hand in hand and are important to make sure that what students are being tasked to do can actually be accomplished with correct and valid information. Without evaluation of sources, strong research skills, and synthesized data students will not be able to accurately show the learning from research, and half of it could potentially be false.

This is an easy mistake to make as people start their physical health journey. When it comes down to the facts muscle tissue and fat tissue are two different things that can be grown or destroyed, but they cannot be converted into each other. When working out you can lose fat, and build muscle.

The article is published by Ashley Taylor, and she has quoted a professor from a good college in New York. The website is also a great source as live science is a great website with lots of facts and explanations.

This is an example of a good source for this, but this second article is a poor source because the title is how to turn fat into muscle and it is a Reddit post from a 15 year old trying to get in better shape. People would believe this Reddit post as a good source because it is working for one person to grow muscle and lose fat, but it is still mis information as it is stated that it is converting fat to muscle which is impossible.

https://www.reddit.com/r/bodyweightfitness/comments/nzl55g/how_do_i_turn_my_body_fat_into_muscle/

There are many diets or fads that go around that people will try and it will not work for them. This second article is from a company trying to sell meat as a snack for people on the carnivore diet, and so it maybe a very biased source as it is striving to convince people to purchase the product that they are selling. The carnivore diet can be good, but it is definitely not the most healthy way to lose weight. Just looking at this source and nothing else you would think the carnivore is the most sound way to lose weight and be healthy even though you are missing out on essential nutrients that can not be acquired through just meat.

As we see it is very easy to be tricked by the media to believe things that are not always the most accurate. As students learn to have good media literacy they will be able to know which sources are providing an unbiased representation of information for projects that maybe assigned in a class or even at a job in the future. Without quality media literacy anything could be treated as a fact and the world would not be able to have real research or learn from others because we would not know truth we would just see what people want us to believe.
