Throughout the story Brian who came to live by the rules becomes a foil character to his father, Rex, who constantly broke the law. Order can come from chaos and vice versa.   In this case Brian himself became an orderly person from a chaotic family growing  up. The picture below shows the parallels of two sides chaos and order.

Rex always worried about the FBI or some undercover agents chasing him and the mother had dreams of being a famous artist. Yet the reality of their situation was they were parents who treated their children horribly because of their belief in their fantasies. The picture below shows how Rex and Rose were always looking at their fantasies while reality is right under them.

The picture below represents the relationship between Jeannette and her father, a broken type of love where Jeannette was aware her Dad's love will not lead her down the right path but, continues to love him anyway.

The picture below shows promises being broken apart which is exactly what Rex did. He promised to build a glass castle for them but, to the demise of the children the promise couldn't be kept.

Brian constantly opposed his father. The photo depicts a bird flying away like a metaphor for death similar to how when Rex finally passes away John is able to celebrate his death with his family, holding no obvious signs of resentment, and instead reminisced about what memories he had.

The picture shows a man peaking through a painting and looking at the real world, like Jeannette who had to figure out her parents weren't in the right and to think ahead to make the best out of her situation.
