Donuts were popularized during the civil war, when they were made to welcome troops in Maine. While the recipes were pretty similar during this time, they came in many different shapes and sizes. The donut was used as a celebratory item that boosted morale in times of war. Life during this time was not that far off than now. When people become a little nervous and times get tough, people bake sweets to calm nerves and receive some dopamine. This is very important because although it was wartime, there would be moments when there was a lull in the field of battle, and soldiers had to find creative ways to entertain themselves. Life during the Civil War was very hard. The people were at war with one another, and although other pastimes were created, like games, reading was an activity that a young man could use to help keep his mind sharp, during a time when it seemed like the violence wouldn't end.

This shows how poor the conditions were for the soldiers in the Civil War.
