History of donuts

Even though the donut is associated with WWI for many, the donut was actually originally made during the civil war!
Donuts were popularized during the civil war, when they were made to welcome troops in Maine. While the recipes were pretty similar during this time, they came in many different shapes and sizes. The donut was used as a celebratory item that boosted morale in times of war. Life during this time was not that far off than now. When people become a little nervous and times get tough, people bake sweets to calm nerves and receive some dopamine. Making baked goods for others is a common practice that shows support on a short term basis.

Pastimes of the 1860's

Reading was a popular pastime among soldiers on both sides of the war. They would read books, newspapers, the Bible, and anything else they could find. This was an easy, and enjoyable activity for soldiers to do during the war, when they had nothing to entertain themselves. This is very important because although it was wartime, there would be moments when there was a lull in the field of battle, and soldiers had to find creative ways to entertain themselves. Life during the Civil War was very hard. The people were at war with one another, and although other pastimes were created, like games, reading was an activity that a young man could use to help keep his mind sharp, during a time when it seemed like the violence wouldn't end.

Hardtack was a type of cracker made for the Union army during battle. It was extremely hard, but was meant to be dipped into coffee or tea to soften it. It was not a favorite among the soldiers and got the nickname "teeth dullers." This shows how poor the conditions were for the soldiers in the Civil War. They were not able to afford the comfort of having nice meals, instead they had to resort to eating food that would not spoil, like hardtack.

This article talks about what the soldiers did between battles. On both sides of the war soldiers spent a lot of there time reading. They read newspapers, letters, and the Bible. When they join the army those who did not have were given a Bible to read. War is a difficult time and the men needed a way to distract themselves. Lots of people turn to religion in difficult times and therefore they spent time reading the Bible. Other activities there participated in were gambling on anything they could, sport (like bowling, boxing, racing on foot or horseback and Baseball), in the winter they played games involving snow.

If they did not own a Bible they could get a free Bible from the U.S. Christian Commission. Another activity was gamboling. They were able to carry small games or card decks with them making gamboling during these games easy and fun.

Gingerbread was seen as comfort food for soldiers fighting in the war. It was offered to soldiers that were wounded in particular. This tells us how simple things (such as gingerbread) makes people feel better during times where they are not at their best. It tells us that during this time people looked forward to life's simple pleasures.
