·         in Little Rock, Arkansas. The local leader of the NAACP was a lady named Daisy Bates.
·         Daisy recruited nine African-American high school students to enroll at Central High.
·        Elizabeth Eckford, Minnijean Brown, Gloria Ray, Terrance Roberts, Ernest Green, Thelma Mothershed, Jefferson Thomas, Melba Patillo, and Carlotta Walls.

 These students became known as the Little Rock Nine

- They were carried in military Jeeps equipped with arms and were watched over by helicopters on their way to school becuase of the Hate that they got from whites.
· They were mistreated in school, death threats and N word
· One fought back and said “white trash.” She was expelled. Printed cards went around saying 1 down 8 to go.
· She was accepted at a school in New York.
- The rest made it through the year
· One of the students was a senior and the police, soldiers, Daisy Bates, and Martin Luther King Jr attended his graduation.
·  “Smile no matter what. Remember, not everyone approved of what Jesus did, but that didn’t stop him.”- Lois Pattillo to her 15 year old daughter, Melba, September 8, 1957.

-The teens voluntarily transferred to the all-white Central High School, it was a city plan to comply with the 1955 Supreme Court ruling
 It stated for all school boards to desegregate as quickly as possible (stop separating blacks from whites)
-Governor Faubus tried to get the federal court to delay the school integration, he said it was to reduce racial violence- the courts did not support him
-President Eisenhower invited Faubus to dinner at his house to urge him to stop disobeying court orders
