Personal Response: This is a narrative that shines light on a dark chapter for many people. It captures the internment camps of the Japanese Americans during World War II through the eyes of a Japanese American boy. I have always been interested in history and social justice. I think this book uses emotional connections to show the resilience, hope in the face of adversity, discrimination, and injustices during this time period.

Personal/Academic Values: This book contains significant educational values and lessons by creating a personalized perspective on a true event that can be overlooked in schools. It fosters empathy, understanding, and critical thinking. It encourages students to speak up about racism, community, prejudice, inequality, and many others. It can inspire students to explore identity, community, injustice, adversity, and many other themes.

Visual: In my representation, I drew the children playing baseball in the internment camp. Despite the barbwire fence, guards, and the dark, harmful, dusty environment, the children are playing. The baseball and the baseball bat are symbols of their hope, resilience, and escape. In their harsh reality, they are defiant.

Effectiveness: The representation activity allows students to creatively express their feelings, emotions, and opinions on the text. They get to show the way they interpreted the plot, setting, characters, and themes. They are able to make connections between the different elements of the text and experiment with styles. This gives them a more in depth understanding and appreciation for history through literature. It is a tool for student learning, engagement, and reflection.
