A key takeaway is that there are two types of protest. Boycott, which is designed to show how important a group is (more subtly showing the issue). The other is a protest, designed to force people to pay attention. Both are equally useful, and both need to be used to see success.

This was shown in the reading when the author said, "In the same way, many women who were inspired by the black civil rights movement of the 1960s and 1970s went on to forge the women's movement" and "Like Martin Luther King Jr., Chavez & Huerta relied on nonviolent civil disobedience in the struggle for equal rights."

One of the shared circumstances and experiences in civil rights movements is being paid less than white men. A connection I saw while reading the Women's Civil Rights Movement and the Mexican Civil Rights Movements. In the article it says "they earned less than men..even women in higher positions were paid less than male colleagues". This reminded me of a a time while watching a documentary about the Mexican Revolution when they said that because Mexican labor was cheaper and more efficient, white men felt threatened by them.

The US government and politics doesn't want citizens to learn about instances of empowerment. What happens when citizens realize they can take power back? What will become of the people in power currently? The government won't be able to take control of their already flimsy influence and they know it. By keeping these movements and revolutions they're lessening the likelihood of the people rising against injustices, corrupt figures and thoroughly flawed systems.

A lot of women's rights protest also used these methods to gain more support and convince people to join their cause in gaining rights. They knew that if their approach was violent they would be shut down and their voice would never be heard.

She was a power house activists and played a big part in the stonewall rights that happened on june 27 1969. (pride month is in june becuase of stonewall riots) Marsha was a member of Gay liberation foundation and the gay activist allicance. She also organized STAR. STAR is a radical polititcal household that focused on homeless poc and lgbtq youth.

A key takeaway for me was the methods used by the people. Especially in the LGBTQIA+ movement. In one of the passages it says "The protesters would storm people's offices with fake blood and cover people's computers with it...They locked themselves to politicians' desks. At one point, they barged into a meeting of a pharmaceutical company and turned over the shrimp cocktail tables". Reading about the wild and clever actions taken broadens my image of what potential methods we could use in the future.

The law was made around trying to keep minorities out of high paying jobs and stay in cheap labor, this can be clearly seen in the discrimination of black, native american, and latinx/chicano citizens. These groups of people would face poverty, violence, and would be looked down on, but the reason they are in that position is because of the legal system. These groups of people couldn't just vote for things to change because they didn't have any legal power, so they used their power of numbers to demand their equality and rights. All of these movements were basically the same thing, but for different groups. They all used similar tactics, from boycotting to marches and civil disobedience.

The main takeaway that I noticed is that both ways of protest are effective but it is important to use the right kind or your voice will never be heard. For Black power movement/ women's rights protests it was important to use a non-violent approach so that people would see how bad they were treated. After gaining attention they could boycott things and places that everyone uses/needs. That causes gains the public's interest much faster then non-violent protest but it must be used in the correct order or people wont listen.

Some factors that prompted different civil rights movements are systemic and economic inequality. For example in 1965, women were paid about 60 cents for every dollar men earned, this was one of the reasons for the women's civil rights movement.

I think that a big issue that prompted many movements was the lack of voice given for minority groups that allowed them to have a say in society. The Women's Suffrage Movement is an obvious example of this, and the efforts were focused around passing laws in congress to gain some control in the government. This is the case for many groups in the U.S., such as those with disabilities who were fighting to gain recognition and have a voice.

my takeaway is i feel like all these protests all started and got organzied in the late 60s-70s. That was a time of uprising and demaded human rights. Boycotting and peaceful protests were happening a lot and people of different backgrounds came together because in the end all they want is to be treated like everyone else. These groups inspired eachother to speak up, the black power protests i think was the breaking point of silence for other margenalized groups like the latinx chicago protests and the lgbtq protests.

The main reason a boycott or protest got attention was from the news. If it wasn't for people causing a scare either by refusing to comply or gathering a large amount of people to have a voice then the public would not be informed. This is why protests and movements go unnoticed. Another reason is the government hiding whats going on in order to silence peoples voices so they the government can stay in power.

One key take away for me was, all these key people in the civil rights movement created a domino effect. and by that I mean, one civil rights activist would do something big, then the next big activist would emerge in history. Sometimes they would even overlap. One historic event would lead to another. Many of the women who were involved in the women suffrage would become part of the civil rights movement for African Americans. - Asmaa

I think its because the government does not want people to riot so if they silence the voices of as many movements as they can there wont be enough people to riot. It also probably has to do with those movements tactics like how with the women's suffrage movement they used fliers and propaganda posters to spread their message.
