In the past, Pangasinan was one of the earliest administrative and political units in the Philippines. In 1571, D. Martin de Goiti officially conquered and colonized the province. The Spanish royal crown made Pangasinan an encomienda to receive instruction on Catholic Faith on April 5, 1972. Eight years later, it was organized into one political unit under alkalde mayors. At that time, alkalde mayors had authority as head of the provincial government with judicial duties and function - which serves the fact that Pangasinan has now become a province.

The people now commemorate the day their province became an encomienda and the year it became a province. They celebrate April 5, 1980 as the official founding day of the province of Pangasinan.

Significant periods
1580 - Pangasinan is organized as a politicio-civil administrative unit or province by Governor General Gonzalo Ronquillo de Peñalosa. Don Pedro Manrique is its first alcalde mayor

1611 - The superior government at that time set the province's territorial limits which makes it a viable political subdivision with a defined territory, a complete set of administrators, and law-abiding citizens. The boundaries of Pangasinan at this time included San Juan, Cordillera and Carabello mountains, Paniqui, and Zambales.

1660 - The short takeover of Manila by the Dutch encouraged a revolt led by Andres Malong of Binalatongan against the Spaniards. However, their independence is short-lived as the Spaniards took back the territory in less than a month later.

1840 - The Casa Real is constructed in Lingayen. This astounding 1700 square kilometer building of stone masonry and bricks serves as the provincial seat of government where the alkalde mayor oversees the province.

1855 - The Spanish Government opens up Sual as an official port of foreign trade. In summary, the province is now trying to find another landfill for their solid waste after the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) closed the Urdaneta City engineered sanitary landfill last March, 2021. The EMB has prohibited its residents from using the 18-hectare property as it has exceeded its capacity. Moreover, in January of this year, officials DENR inspected the site and issued two orders for violations of the Philippine Clean Water Act of 2004 (Republic Act No. 9275)and the Ecological Solid waste Management Acy of 2000 (Republic Act No. 9003).

This depravation is tackled by SDG 11: Sustainable cities and communities.

A sustainable solution must be made immediately because of many reasons namely, (1) contamination of land, water, and air, (2) lower incidence of disaster capacity (3) increased prevalence of human infectious diseases and, (4) harm towards animal and marine life.

One sustainable solution comes in mind when I think about waste disposal management. Several years ago, I watched a video of how Singapore stands to be one of the most cleanest countries in the world. I have visited their country many times now as my father was a citizen of the country a few years back and I must say I am impressed of how well they keep their streets clean. They have this unique solid waste management system called WTE (Waste-to-energy) plants that has numerous benefits to the economy and little to no negative impacts to the environment. Watch the video to see the whole process of this waste management plan.

BENEFITS
1.) Optimized land use - the country has special waste management facilities that hold the incinerated waste.
2.) Maximized energy - the heat energy generated from the incineration is converted into actual energy that the country can utilize.
3.) Minimized environmental impact - The incineration is done in special machines that trap the emissions so that it won't contaminate the air.
HARMFUL EFFECTS
1.)The incinerated waste is still dumped into specially-treated water sites. It claims to have not disrupted the ecological balance in the area but there is lack of researches to prove this.

National Environment Agency. (2022). Waste Management Infrastructure. It also aims to determine the level of knowledge of the respondents on climate change and identify their attitude towards it.
Proposed solution to decrease CO2 emissions that contribute to climate change

According to this document released by USAID, the largest contributor to climate change comes from the energy sector in the Philippines. To help decrease the emission of carbon dioxide in the country, I propose that more e-jeepneys be utilized as the main vehicle of transport especially in Pangasinan who has tons of jeepneys and tricycles to cater to long travel distances.

The transport sector accounts for 23% of global energy-related CO2 emissions and is continuously growing due to increasing passengery and freight activity. The electrification of passenger cars and public vehicles appear to have a potential to reduce these emissions. This article finds strengths and opportunities in the electric vehicle (EV) industry, as well as weaknesses and threates related to technology utilization and competition.
BENEFITS
1.) Bigger capacity - In Pangasinan, tricycles are used by majority of the citizens to reach the establishment centers. There is a long time of travel due to very distant destination areas. To be specific, residential areas are placed far from the center of commerce in each district. E-jeepneys can hold to 15-20 people while tricycles can only hold a maximum of 5 people. Bigger capacity could also mean less roundabout travel trips from the neighborhood to the city centers.
2.) Lower greenhouse gas emissions leads to lower air pollution. Lower air pollution reduces significant climate change.
3.) No need to pay for gas - Gas is a limited source of energy. Due to its scarceness, gas prices are considerably expensive. E-jeepneys only need rechargeable batteries for it to work
HARMFUL EFFECTS
1.) E-jeepney batteries take a long time to charge (18 to 24 hours) but actual usage only runs for 4-5 hours at most.
2.) Unfamiliar mode of transportation - Citizens tend to ride vehicles that they are used to like tricycles and jeepneys.
3.) Lack of national support or budget - If traditional jeepneys are to be completely replaced by e-jeepneys, the national government should alot enough budget for it to be implemented. This is not entirely possible because the government has its priorities placed elsewhere.

Agaton, C., etc. (2019). Diesel or Electric Jeepney?

Like all other Filipinos, Pangasinan people are not set apart from values and attitudes that are practiced and observed here in the country. They are hospitable, family centered, respectful, hardworking and religious.

A well-known literary piece entitled "The Legend of Princess Urduja" originated from the province. It tells the journeys of a warrior princess whose army is composed of both women and men.

Pangasinenses also show their values through the arts as exampled by the song "Malinak lay labi" which represents their traditional way of courtship.

One of the most visited places in this province is the Minor Basilica of Our Lady of Manaoag. The image of the Virgin Mary of Manaoag found in this church is believed to perform miracles and said to have the power to heal. I, myself, have visited this church many times and it is as grand as descriptions go.
