Belonging is an important part of coming-of-age stories. As people grow, things change, so often people don’t fit in quite like they used to and instead need to find an alternative. Many coming of age stories are about a character learning where they fit in. It’s been a while since I watched it but I remember the Lion King being about Simba’s belonging with many groups such as Timon and Pumbaa who were the only people Simba felt a connection too after Mufasa’s death.

This also connects to how we first started school, a place where we didn’t necessarily know anyone, but progressively find people similar to us.

Identity is something we explore coming of age. It is about finding out what you are and who you are wanting to be. It is also finding out your ideas and beliefs and what your moral is. Almost in every teenage movies, the characters go through life experiences in order to find out their identity.
