In The Hired Girl by Laura Amy Schlitz, it is taught how to be independent, and friendly, and how to get through hard times. In the beginning, Joan is working on the farm. Joan always wants to read some books. Joan shows she is independent when she talks about books.
She writes, "... I read one of dear Miss Chandler's books," (11). This shows being independent can be reading, writing, or working. It can make her sure of herself and her work. In the middle of the book, she runs away from home. Joan meets Mr. Soloman and he teaches Joan about being friendly. Joan writes, "... can't spend the night on the bench," (86). He shows to be nice and kind to people. It also indicates that caring and being friendly is a significant asset. And at the end of the book Joan gets through hard times. Joan is at Anna's wanting to help Malka. She argues, "... I was worried about Malka working too hard ... help with dishes," (355). Joan is persistent in helping Malka, even if it is dishes. In conclusion, Joan has been independent, friendly, and persistent. Joan had learned this through the book and adapted to it.

Summary: AMBER & CLAY tells the story of Rhaskos, born into slavery in ancient Thessaly, in Greece. Rhaskos, then known as Thrax, was a stableboy who spent most of his time shoveling waste when he was a little child after his mother Meda was sold to another family in distant Athens. Melisto, a daughter of the family who is roughly a year younger than Rhaskos and is disobedient and free-spirited, was the purchaser of Meda. Melisto hated her life of confinement in which she was never let outside and was forced to commit all her free time to weave. Melisto was given the opportunity to learn new things about herself when she was selected to join a group of girls who served the goddess Artemis for a year while living in the country. Her term as Artemis' servant, however, was short. Melisto and Rhaskos finally meet through Meda and exchange lessons with one another about friendship, freedom, and more. Rhaskos is now a slave in Athens under the name Pyrrhos.
Similarities: Both books talk about culture or religion. In Amber and Clay, it talks about Greece and its culture while in The Hired Girl, it talks about practicing Christianity and Judaism.
Differences: In the book, Amber and Clay the main character was forced to split apart from their family, while in The Hired Girl, the main character chooses to run away from her family.

The experience of Joan wouldn't be shared with many people. From the job, she is working to how she got there. She worked in domestic services which not a lot of people did. How she got there by running away from her own family. Women might have run away if their families are trying to force them away. But domestic services in the 1910s were not high in demand.

This is a wanted poster for men and women who want a job for essential war work. This poster explains everything that he or she needs to know about the job, including the wage, the different kinds of jobs available for men and women, and who they would be hired by. In the book, Joan sees a poster similar to this, which is when she realizes that if she can't go to school, she should at least try and make money. She asked her father if she could keep the egg money, but when that failed, she left for Baltimore where she could get a better job. Joan was already thinking about running away and after seeing this poster, it pushed her even more to run away and start a new life somewhere else.

The day before Abigail Sorenson turned sixteen, twenty years ago, her brother Robert vanished without a trace. She began receiving The Guidebook that year, a self-help book whose unknown author claimed it would help her life soar to heights beyond her wildest dreams. Through her family's pain over her brother's disappearance, a move across continents, the terrible end of her marriage, and the start of her new life as a single mother and café owner in Sydney, The Guidebook's missives have been a constant in Abi's life. Twenty years later, Abi receives an all-expenses-paid invitation to a weekend event where she will learn "the truth" about the Guidebook.
Similarity: Both the main characters in the book are independent and lose a loved one young. Both books tell the journey of the main characters and how they are independent.
Difference: Both of these books happen in different time periods and Joan loses her mother while Abi loses her brother, so their memories together would have been different.
