To overcome her intense shyness, Barton was recommended from a traveling phrenologist (is the belief that the shape of a person's skull can reveal information about their personality) to become a teacher. Despite the fact that the phrenologist's advice was not medically sound, Barton worked as a teacher for ten years. She even established the first public school in Bordentown, New Jersey. However, she resigned after learning that the school had hired a man for twice her salary, claiming that she would never work for less than a man.

To add, Barton was an untrained nurse. Although formal nursing education courses existed prior to the Civil War, they were uncommon. The majority of Civil War nurses were untrained volunteers.

Not everything was perfect in Barton's Red Cross. She was said to be a self-sufficient workaholic who fiercely guarded her vision of what the Red Cross should be. She, too, was depressed, but nothing rallied her more than an urgent call for help. Her authoritarian leadership style and alleged mismanagement of funds forced her to resign in 1904.
