Case 1: Dennis v. United States
Eugene Dennis, who was the General Secretary of the Communist Party USA lost his case. The court ruled in a 6-2 decision that Dennis did not have the right to exercise free speech, if the exercise involved the creation of a plot to overthrow the government. This was important because it drew the line of where political speech can come to an end.

Case 2: Morse v. Fredrick
In 2007 a student, Joseph Fredrick, created a sign that read, Bong Hits 4 Jesus. There was an olympic torch passing at the crossroads and the school allowed their students to be dismissed early in order to watch. Joseph did not attend school that day due to snow on the ground, but was reprimanded by teachers to tear up the sign. The final court decision was in favor of the school. This is a pivotal point because it shows students are still responsible for their actions if it reflects on a school.

Case 3: Snyder vs Phelps
In 2006 the Westboro Baptist Church picketed Matthew Snyder's funeral. Matthew was a homosexual soldier and the church decided to create signs that stated, "Thank God for dead Soldiers, Don't pray for the USA, and God hates the USA/Thank God for 9/11." Matthew Snyder's father later saw the signs on the news and claimed they caused emotional distress. The court ruled with Phelps on the consensus that the signs were directed toward the public, not Snyder in specific. This is a pivotal point because it shows you can get away with saying certain things

1. President Trump is set sign an executive order that would withhold any federal funding from public and private colleges and universities that do not protect free speech on campuses. This would not allow federal funding to any college that does not agree to certify that they are complying with the first amendment right.

2. A small Boston free speech rally drew the attention of white supremacists and Neo-Nazi demonstrators. Both sides were trying to avoid what had happened in Virginia the weekend before. Which was a violent clash. There were no major injuries during this free speech rally. The police made sure the protesters an d the counter protesters were atlas thirty feet away. The Neo-Nazis were saying they were there to protect there first amendment right. They were told not to bring any weapons or "display inflammatory imagery".
