The way I interpreted the quote we like to create these personas and even though we may code switch to appeal to our many different social groups, we live in a general archetype that people perceive to be us ,but this is not true because we essentially adopt these personas to appease others and be perceived favorably, and this poses a challenge, because our "true self" is suppressed. What this quote essentially asks the reader is if we can live in these archetypes we adopt, if we can express our true selves and enjoy our life to the fullest. I believe not, while we are good at living with these personas and concealing our true selves. We do not feel liberated until that one breaking point when we do not care about anyone else this why escapism has such an appeal and as humans we seek refuge in imagination ,nature, or art. This is exemplified by the movie American Psycho, where Wall Street employee Patrick Bateman struggle to keep up his persona as a regular privileged individual when he truly has psychotic, narcissistic, and homicidal tendencies. Which is why the viewer always hears Batemans inner thought throughout the movie, a tribute to how we present our personas while suppressing our and thoughts for social appeal.
