The LCAP should include a Black student achievement program. Something similar could be created for Pacific Islander students. Look at Oakland LCAP for guidance.

Bring Back Standardized Arts Programs in Elementary and MIddle School

Goals are clear. I feel the Goals for SEL need to include more arts programs at all grade levels (especially at the Elementary and Middle school level). Culturally Relevant and Responsive Education MUST include a rigorous arts program with fully credentialed teachers. I know this because I have been teaching for 26 years first with LBUSD and now in LAUSD. I have taught Dance at all grade levels starting at Hamilton Middle School, LIncbergh Middle School and lastly at Jordan High School. I was the arts department chair, co-wrote the Dance Standards, and also was the teacher lead for The Pacific Island Club at Hamilton Middle School. My own son is in LB schools he is of mixed race African American and European American. He has slipped through the cracks. He is a Kinisthetic and Tactile learner. with mild ADHD. He is needs have not been met and has faced atrocities in discipline and racism. My biggest critique is the lack of collaborative and culturally relevant education and responsive education. For 4 years I had the honor of running the dance program at Lindbergh Middle School. Everything you are discussing to day was met by this program and they ripped it away when testing became a priority. I urge you to consider re-instating the arts in middle and elementary school. I would be happy to be a part of this ginginma@yahoo.com. Thank you Shayla Brown and Malaea Fepulea'i for emphasizing the need for Culturally relevant curriculum.
I would also like to add the amazing work I did with AEMP for LAUSD with Dr. Noma Le Moine. A very powerful fact I remember from training with her is that 60% of African American Male inmates are Kinesthetic learners. Yet, how many times has my son picked up and built, constructed, acted, sang, painted. None!!! for the last two years. LB needs to get in the now and start providing education to diverse learners not just racially but also consider culture is also how you learn.

You have to go 15 minutes from your house to get what children should have at every school. One thing I've experienced with our district is to talk to people and follow the chain of command. That's hard when, as a person of color, you're taught to follow the rules. I've had to approach teachers and have conversations with them about cultural differences. If a child doesn't look at you in the eyes when they speak to you, it's not disrespectful - it's how we were raised.

I want to ask what internally is being provided to LBUSD staff & teachers in terms of DEIB training...? With the recent racial injustices occuring, our teachers and school staff are on the front lines of what our kids are manifesting and teachers/school staff's responses (or nonresponses) are critical for our babies to process their own feelings. (Yes, this speaks to SEL and school counseling and mental health and the importance of that too! I know our teachers carry a lot, but this is vital and many BIPOC students won't seek mental health services, as we know, so it comes to our teachers and school staff most directly often times).

As a parent sitting on a district equity committee, too-- I've seen many implicit biases and microaggressions occurring from teachers AND principals that are NOT anti-racist. I understand it's a work-in-progress (we are all on this journey, for sure), but I would like to see if internally there is training or some type of education being done for school teachers and staff to raise their own awareness, and how to both address the injustices that our babies are seeing everywhere, and also how not to perpetuate it in the classroom/school setting...?
