Most if not all of this book takes place in the Warsaw Ghetto. Wladyslaw Szpilman and all of the other Jewish people were under the constant threat of being killed by Gestapo, SS officers, or even Jewish officers. The setting is incredibly important to the book, as it gives this feeling of being trapped; this feeling that even if they tried, they could not escape the ghetto. For example, a lot of the story towards the end is Wladyslaw trying to leave the ghetto, while people reject him, saying 'they don't want to take in a Jewish person.'

I think that the Mozes' station in life and their full family influences their perception of the holocaust, as many other families were separated and gasses and Miriam and Eva were never alone. They acknowledge this many times when talking to each other, but the book is still different because of this. Even after the Holocaust, the starting setting of the Mozes' family still affects Eva and Miriam as they both feel alone without a big family or apart from eachother.

From the reading from today, in my opinion, Hannah should stay isolated from the other people in the camp. I say this because, in the camps, we don't know if someone could be collecting information (Escape plans, hoarding food, etc;) and giving the info to the guards hoping to get better living conditions. However, Hannah talks to the other people in the camp by telling them stories therefore interacting more than she needs to.

Another opinion I have based off of the reading from today is that Gitl plays a sort of mentor role for Hannah. She tells her what to do not in a commanding manner but instead a guide on how to survive. She even went as far to include Hannah in her plan and tell her secrets.

Two major themes that have shown up a lot in The Pianist are family and survival. Szpilman was extremely caring, especially for his family. He often felt he had to protect all of them so when the Jewish policemen saved him from going to a Death Camp and separated him from his family, he was originally extremely upset. He wanted to be with his family, but the policemen were able to get him to leave. Survival has shown up so much, in survival for yourself, your family, other Jewish people. At first when Szpilman was separated from his family it was really him trying to survive, but he then started to help other Jewish people who needed help, while still helping himself.

Eva and Miriam have a very close relationship and care a lot for each other, Eva cares a lot for her family also, she was very worried when her parents and sisters went missing and got separated from each other. The twins got along well with the other twins and were very helpful to each other, they would give advice on how to get food and they also told Eva that potatoes can help cure Miriam's illness.

In the pianist, the main character Szpilman is living in the Warshaw Ghetto. Throughout the book he is forced to move houses, go hungry, and survive off of what he has. Throughout the book he shows great resilience and strength. I think this because as the book goes on, he just rolls with whats happening. He doesn't ever show or act devastated except when he cried once. The book shows this scene in great detail because it's the first time he has ever cried during the war. As he is forced to move houses, and make money off of selling bread and be hungry, he never looses mental stability, and keeps willing himself to live and survive. He is extremely resilient and strong, even during the worst times he continues to survive and get through it all.

Throughout the recent readings of the book "Parallel Journeys" by Elanor Ayer, a recurring theme I have notice is hypocrisy. This is mostly portrayed through one of the main character Alfons Heck a Nazi youth, and everyone who was a Nazi. Throughout the text, the followers and Hitler claimed that they'd gain power in a 'calm' and 'peaceful' manner, but this was only propaganda as this winning of the war was only gained and riled up by the hate of others. That alone is already something that isn't peaceful, but it is known that throughout the war the Nazis tried to cover up their ways by finding countless justification to kill Jewish people. Though they attacked Jewish people for causing 'destruction' and 'hate,' the Nazis were the ones initiating this and at an even greater scale than what they claimed the Jewish people were doing.

One theme that was constant throughout the book was determination. Eva was determined to save her sister and herself during their time in Auschwitz. Eva showed in her writing how committed she was too surviving and how she fought for her life. Another theme that showed up was trust. whilst they're in the camp they met two other twin girls and they became acquaintances. They had trust in each other over time and the other twins taught Eva and Miriam advice that helped them keep going. At the end of the book Eva shared how it was important to have trust in yourself and to stand up for yourself. She was strong throughout her experience and did great things before she passed.

Helen was taken to Birkenau (which is in Auschwitz), Night and Fog was filmed on the abandoned grounds of Auschwitz. what I thought was so interesting about this book was that after we saw the movie yesterday and were a "little" traumatized I went home and read a story about someone who experienced the horrors exactly as they showed in the book. I also thought about the book that I just read: Milkweed. In this book they also talk about anti-semitism after the war which is also shown in Parallel Journeys.

Auschwitz was the biggest and arguably worst camp ever. The conditions were horrible. People had to share small beds and bathrooms, as well as the little food and water that they got which was always disgusting. Hundreds of people died every day from dehydration and starvation, not to mention gas chambers. It was a horrible place made by horrible people.

We can see that Bruno is selfish and arrogant. Bruno likes being right and when he is accused of being wrong he argues a lot. He tries to impress his father and mother by being very polite. On the other hand he picks fights with his sister, Gretel and calls her "a hopeless case." His closest relationship is with his new friend Shmuel who lives in a concentration camp. They sit and talk all day but Bruno does not understand how Shmuel's rights are being stripped from him and how he is being abused. Shmuel and Bruno get very close over the year that Bruno lives in Auschwitz.

I feel this book pushed the 3rd stage of isolation (Ghettoization) into my mind when reading. as our main character Hannah/ Chaya is being transported to a concentration camp via train, we get vivid descriptions on how the trip was like. once they got there, their rights were taken from them, being defined as less than human compared to the soldier, and forced into cramped cold living spaces. they were starved and worked to live.

I think many of the stages of isolation connect to this book however the most fitting one would be concentration camps. At the beginning of the novel we can tell that Bruno comes from a wealthy family and he hates being wrong. But when Bruno means Shmuel he realizes that they both live very different lives. Shmuel doesn't give many details about what it is like living in the camp but he expresses that he is very sad when him and his family can't find his father. He also tells Bruno about the lack of food and Bruno starts to notice that Shmuel has many bruises from the soldiers. I think the author wanted to show the viewers details from both perspectives, a Jewish boy living in a concentration camp and a rich German boy. In conclusion, the book connects to the stage of isolation, concentration camps.

The Devils Arithmetic is a very unique book though the theme is very similar to a lot of the other holocaust books. The book takes place during the holocaust on a concentration camp in 1941 after the Jews were already stripped of their rights and aware of the dangers that they faced during this time. The book connects to multiple stages of isolation but I will only discuss 2. The Concentration Camps And the stripping of rights. The main character in this book is attempting to escape the camp but the people in the camps do not listen to the main character who tells them that there are millions of Jews who will be killed and that they have to escape so they just sit and talk and re live the experience of the holocaust from the perspective of someone with the knowledge of what will inevitably happen.

When Amsterdam gets captured new laws are set for Jewish people. They are not allowed to be on the street from 7pm to 6 am. They were fired from jobs and weren't allowed to ride bikes. When Smuel's father goes missing, Bruno tries to help his friend by dressing as prisoner and following Smuel into the concentration camp. Towards the end of their search, the boys get caught into a herd of prisoners where they are led to an inside area. They enter a separate room with the belief that is was a "routine shower", but then get gassed and they both die.

Surviving the Angel of Death

Eva must have been very strong to forgive what had happened to her during the Holocaust. No matter how easy she made it seem, the conditioning and evil of the Nazi's actions to strip her rights away obviously had a large affect on the survivor's population. Many people felt offended that she meant to clean up the work that the Nazis had done and they did not want " anyone to forgive the Nazis for what they had done", they felt like they had their right to be angry and mourn their lost ones taken away, which caused a lot on controversy.

Throughout the book "the boy in the stripped pajamas" the plot of the story revolved around bruno and his family and how he is navigating the big new move. One stage of isolation that is portrayed throughout the plot of the book is stripping of rights and othering. For example as it was shown in the book with the concentration camp and how they were being treated and surcumbed to wearing the stripped uniform and being barefooted they were treated as other. and this idea of having power/ being in the upper class systems like bruno and his family is this creates this dynamic/ system between Shmuel and bruno and how they are structured to live Different lives due to the Many stages of isolation that is portrayed throughout the entire book and plot.
