The Dodo: The Weirdest Bird on This Planet

The dodos is a very beautiful and extinct flightless bird, that used to live in Mauritius (east to Madagascar) until 1662, when humans to kill it for some more meat. His “brother” is another bird called “Rodrigues solitaire”. The closest living relative to the dodo is the Nicobar pigeon. Some white dodos were originally thought to exist, but that was later debunked.

It has a height of 62-75 cm and weighs 10-14 kg, which, thinking about it, is pretty big for birds. They normally eat roots, seeds, fruits and nuts, making them herbivores and vegans. When they mate, they leave an egg on the ground, much larger than that of a goose, largely because they are waaay too fat to fly. Oh, and only reproduce once per mating season, in August. It is quite mysterious, because we only know his appearance by 16th century paintings, like the one in the start of this article. It has grey or brown feathers, a “naked” head, a green, black and yellow beak (honestly a good combo for beak color) and yellow legs.

Did you know it was onde thought to be a normal pigeon? Dodos were studied mostly during late 16th century to mid 17th century, and in that timeframe, there were no cameras to take photos. So when illustrations came in, they were referred by “small ostrich”, “water chicken”, a type of albatross and a species of vulture. When it was opened sometime during its heyday in Oxford university, they found many similarities to pigeons and the before-mentioned bird, “Rodrigues solitaire”, leading them to conclude that they were some weird type of pigeons. They was ALSO later debunked.

This bird also originated its own expression, “as dead as a dodo”, which means that something is useless or obsolete.

They lived during the Ice Age and when the same ended, the Woolly Mammoths went extinct.

The Woolly Mammoths habitat, it’s called tundra steppe and it was very cold and it could get as low as -50°C. Its habitat crossed northern Asia, Europe and north parts of North America. To survive the cold they had to have some physical adaptations like woolly fur, thick skin, long tusks, small ears.

If you think that the Woolly Mammoths lived at the same time of Dinosaurs you are wrong because the Mammoths lived 5 million years ago and the Dinosaurs lived 246 millions ago, that is a big difference!

They lived and travelled in large groups and their were led by the old female.

Have you ever thought about the size of their tusks? Because they are very big, around 15 feet long, which they used them for fighting and digging the deep snow.

Did you know that we can tell the age of a woolly mammoth from the rings of its tusk, like looking at the rings of a tree?

His head was like a hedgehog and he walked on four legs. Zippo had wings and flew around the forest while he was not sleeping. Zippo liked to roll like a panda and it was very cute because his tail wrapped around his body. Zippo had an asexual reproduction.

Capybaras are the largest rodents in the world, and they're super cool! They live in South America, in countries like Brazil, and they love being near water, like rivers and lakes.

One really cool thing about capybaras is that they are super friendly, which means they are always in groups. You can see them in groups of 20 capybaras.

They have chubby bodies and short legs, and their fur is kind of brown, which helps them blend into the environment. When they feel scared, they dive into the water and only go up with their noses out to breathe. Capybaras are herbivores, they only eat plants, like grass and leaves.

Another cool fact is that they are really relaxed and sometimes hang out with other animals, like birds and monkeys! There are even videos of capybaras playing with dogs!

Capybaras are super cute and awesome animals. Who wouldn't want one as a pet? But, in reality, they need a lot of space and water, so let’s leave them in the wild!!
