- Students will use imaginary environments to conceive characters in playwriting.

Students will be able to…

- Generate ideas for characters using imagination and theatre skills.

- Write descriptive character sketches inspired by different environments.

- Develop short scripts with dialogue that reflects unique character traits.

- Warm-up: Give students random prompts (ex: a name, an object, a setting). They must write a short monologue for the character.

- Group Work: In small groups, students share their characters and combine them into a short scene.

- Compare & Contrast: Students look at character creation in a classic play (Romeo and Juliet) vs. a modern play (Steel Magnolias).

- Use your imagination!!!!

- Write 2–3 lines of dialogue between two original characters in conflict.

- Post a short description of your character (ex: “John is a chef who secretly dreams of being a jazz musician”).

- Respond to one peer’s post with a suggestion: “What if your character had to make this choice instead?” (Be creative)

- Optional: Share an image or GIF that captures the essence of your character.

A well-written character is essential in a play because it drives the story, engages the audience, and makes the performance believable.
