I do honestly think I have improved since my last reflection. I think in both endurance and timing I have improved, along with my overall enjoyment of class. Now dancing is fun for me because I'm actually starting to understand some of the mechanics and concepts of the peices we're learning. I think my timing to start when being counted in has improved and being more stable on my feet when turning. My mind set has definitely improved a lot, so that if I have some injury I can still dance with, instead of trying not to dance because of the injury I still dance and work around going easier on that part of my body and focus more on the other parts of the movement to make my form in the places that aren't injured better. I also have started caring a lot less about other people seeing my dance and even if I mess up it's ok if someone saw me. I plan to try and stand in the front line more often.

1. KQED Spark- Rosa Montoya

2. The clip showed a teacher who is a master at flamenco who trained from a young girl to be a flamenco dancer. The video showed her teaching a flamenco class and interviewed some of her pupils. She explained that flamenco is more then just waving your arms and yelling Olay, it's something you have to feel through your veins, it's an aditude you have to have.

3. In the video I saw people who are very commited to a difficult art form, and make time to pursue their passion. I also heard about how dancing flamenco is no easy feat and takes a lot of strength. I saw how the teacher helped her students and heard how she started dancing at a very young age with her grandpa because he played the flamenco guitar. I liked how dedicated each of the dancers were, and that when they danced they were only dancing not thinking of other things of getting distracted. The women interviewed in the video talked about the discipline necessary to do flamenco, which I find very impressive when people can stick to something even when it gets hard.

Katie Wanger
Ms. Cediel
Intermediate Dance (term 2)
2/26/15
Flamenco Timeline
Flamenco:
Gypsies from India begin Flamenco
Music has a Sub-Saharan African influence
Gypsies migrated to Spain
15th Century Gypsies ended up on the Iberian Peninsula in Spain
Gypsies moved around a lot and were not well liked at this time
People did not trust Gypsies so towns would try to get rid of them when they came to town
Gypsies were always persecuted to a certain extent
Flamenco was well tolerated when it first arrived
Was danced by the lower class in Andalusia (Southern Spain)
Gypsies were hired to dance Flamenco for Noble people who were interested in how the dance was done
Became associated with Giantos (Romani people of spain)
Lacked prestige of other dance forms
1492 Turbulent times for people involved with Flamenco
1492 Gypsies, Moors (Moriscos) and Jews were persecuted in Spain and kicked out of spain by the spanish inquisition
Persecuted because of ethnicity and religion
Giantos were fundamental maintaining this art form
Oral culture because most of the people who danced flamenco were poor and illiterate
Many Flamenco songs began to reflect desperation, hope, pride, and struggle
Desperation from being persecuted and dispersed
1765-1860 First Flamenco schools created in Cadiz
In 1842 book Zincali was published saying Flamenco was synonymous with Gypsy
1869-1910 (Golden Age) Flamenco was developed in numerous musical cafes into one of it’s definitive forms
1910-1955 Flamenco Singing is marked by the opera Flamenca
1915 on Flamenco shows were organized and presented around the world
1955 “Flamenco Renaissance” now guitar players became the great protagonists of the show
Became westernized in Central America
Late 19th century: Flamenco in Spanish used to mean Flame colored
Usually dancers wear bright red and act in an arrogant/ flamboyant behavior
Still many questions about dance and it’s origin
Zambra of the Gypsies still performed today
Lack a lot of early written history about Flamenco, because it was a less prestige dance do scholars weren’t interest in writing about it, and most who danced it were illiterate
Now it is about the intimacy between the dancer and musician
Bold and vibrant dance which includes dancing/ guitar/ palmas (claps)
Slipped out of fashion many times
Many different forms of the dance
Flamenco is also a musical term
Flamenco is about passions and feeling the movement, not just doing the dance movement
Very difficult art form
