Before the United States involved itself in the actual fighting against the Axis Powers during WWII, there were American citizens who volunteered to fight alongside and within military units ran by other countries. The picture below shows the very first volunteer fighters from the United States.

The draft was a major factor during World War Two. The United States government required by law that all men between the ages of 18 and 64 years of age to register for the draft. Once the United States was attacked by Japan, there was a rise in application. The iconic picture below shows Uncle Sam with his famous line "I Want You For U.S. Army" This was used as a way to get people to go and get signed up for the impending draft.

During World War Two, women enlisted in the military as well. They were part of their own sections within branches of the military. There were multiple groups that women were part including the WAC (Women's Army Auxiliary) which specialized in things such as mail, typing, and the informational parts of the army. The picture below shows that women chose to take a stance in the war effort alongside the men.

Minority groups, such as the Japanese, faced harsh social treatment in the United States during World War Two. However, minority groups did play a very prominent role in military service. Hundreds of thousands of Hispanic Americans signed up and fought in the front lines of the war. In total, there were about 16 million U.S. soldiers who fought in WWII and out of those there were between 250,000 and 500,000 Hispanic Americans who participated. A more commonly known minority group were the Navajo Code Talkers. They used their native language to "code" important information so that the enemies couldn't understand the information contained within the documents. The picture below shows two Navajo Code Talkers translating a message.

During World War Two the number of female workers increased greatly. Women were hired in factories to take over for men who had joined the military. The labor force of women grew by 6.5 million during the time of WWII. The picture below is of the iconic "Rosie the Riveter". This poster was used to recruit women to the industrial workforce in place of the men who had went off to war.

They were put in place in order to have economical stability and to prevent inflation during the time of war. People were strongly encouraged to buy war bonds and buying them was seen as a strong form of patriotism. The picture is just one example of patriotic propaganda that urged people to purchase war bonds.
